Late Night Parts Pulling

Late Night Parts Pulling

Damn you autumn, you get too dark too fast! Donned my elastic strap-on headlight and went to work pulling what was left under the dash of the Esprit. Dash/column wiring, HVAC box, etc.

I don’t know WHY or HOW there is this much wiring in an pre-computer car from the 70's, but now that its all tagged and disconnected it can come out.

It all snakes around the column where 80% of it is plugged...

Fenders are overrated.

So is wiring. So I removed that too.

Before:

After:

Only the HVAC wiring remains in the engine compartment, which will be pulled soon with the housing along with the rest of the dash wiring.

Sadly my plans to use the passenger side inner fender went out the window. It had hidden rust. So not much was saved for my TA on this go-round.

While I was down there one of my wood...

But what’s the workaround for not being able to reply to one’s comment? It just makes the page jump to the top of the post. Pic for your time:

Esprit Rhinoplasty

Esprit Rhinoplasty

Braved the bugs to rip into the ol’ parts car some more. Gave up though because it rained a lot lately, and there were a LOT of bugs.

If you remember where we left off, I had removed the driver’s side fender to access some nuts and wiring.

Well I need to get the passenger fender off too so I can remove the HVAC housing, and save the (hopefully rust free unlike the driver’s side) inner wheel...

Parts Car Goes Dashless

Parts Car Goes Dashless

Yanked the dash the other day. Went pretty smooth. A few hidden fasteners, some surprise wiring, but pretty smooth nonetheless.

The main reason for pulling the dash, bedsides selling off parts I don’t need, is to save the parts I DO need. Namely the HVAC ducts. I have a heater & A/C box out of another car that I bought many years ago, and a dash (both things my roller project came without)...

Dash Deconstruction

Dash Deconstruction

Part 1: Remove Ancillarys is complete. Besides the radio and some other small bits the dash is ready to come out.

Labelled all the wiring so I know where they go back to (if I even use this harness or the one that came with my ‘77 that’s all hacked up, I might just go full custom someday) and saved all the hardware with their respective components so I know what goes where. ‘79 was the...

Great, now I have hantavirus.

Great, now I have hantavirus.

Pulled the last bits of moldy mouse pee and turd infested interior from the Esprit last night (shit, I just remembered the ‘package shelf’ and speaker grilles... and I think there’s insulation behind the dash. crap.) being the door panels and seat belts. Well, MOST of the seat belts. Those encrusted into the rusty floor will have to have the metal cut out around the bolts, and removed while in...

FINALLY.

FINALLY.

Some parts I actually NEED for my Trans Am have been removed from the Esprit parts car.

“Hidden” wiper arms. They go for about $40 in this condition. That’s..... $360 to go in parts/sales before I break even on buying the car.

I was getting sick of not having room under the hood to work on removing bits so I took it, the hinges, and latch out. Now I have the right bolts for my TA’s hinges,...

Time To Turn Thy Attention

Time To Turn Thy Attention

To The Trashy Trans Am.

Its been two months (!) since I made the 3/4 rotisserie to be able to easily access the rust issues in the rear quarters and left rear frame rail. So since my parts car is... parting, and it runs, I can start working on sheetmetal repairs.

Step one: Order parts

Step two: Start hacking.

This is getting replaced, along with the other side that has Bondo in it:

And this...

Fun With YouTube Captions

Fun With YouTube Captions

I haven’t uploaded a fully edited YouTube video in 11 months, and never use the Closed Captioning, so while I was watching back my “BARN FIND FIRST START IN 20 YEARS OMG” video with the cc on, I saw some gems nearly worthy of Devars.

Why, Don. WHY?

When normies be shopping for part outs

They really do smell. A lot.

Crank that Souja Boy 301 Poncho!

It runs, YAY!

(video goes live tomorrow AM)

IT RUNS

IT RUNS

Quite well, in fact, now that I found why it had no spark.

After doing some research on wiring diagrams on Friday, and deciding that I was overcomplicating things by wanting to trace and probe wiring under the dash and to the steering column/ignition switch.

(bonus points if you see the spiders I didn’t when I was under there)

So instead, I simply ran a wire from the battery positive to the...

Spoiler Alert

Spoiler Alert

I didn’t fire up the Esprit last night. Too busy cleaning out the shed that I need to rehash this fall. A post for another day, perhaps. I did, however, find time to plumb the electric fuel pump I got.

A little hose here, a little power wire to the battery there, and a looooong stretch of wire to and from a switch on the ground circuit so I can crank the ignition from the driver’s seat (or...

Spent a few hours here, a few minutes there, got more of the interior out of the Esprit, and demounted the 1990's Fleet Farm tires (that I found the receipt for inside the car!) from the rally wheels that are in... OK shape for being buried in a field forever.

They cleaned up alright. A little sandblasting,...

I've owned it for a week now.

I've owned it for a week now.

And this is as far as I’ve got.

The interior is mostly out. I wanted to get what’s left of the floor uncovered first and while the driver’s seat was already rusted off, the passenger seat was still ‘firmly’ bolted to the floor. Surprisingly it came out quite easy.

Hey, this is for a 301 Turbo 4bbl. I wonder why it, and a air pump (not to mention a spare fan, dist, and alt) were in there... but its worth a few bucks if I can clean it up.

What's better than a non-running parts car?

What's better than a non-running parts car?

A running one, duh.

IF the pos 301 runs.

The guys I bought it from said they tried, got the motor to turn over, and got the starter to... try starting? It was all locked up from sitting in a field. They removed it.

And left it on the front seat.

With no bolts.

So under further inspection, the carb linkage moves, the fuel pump is disconnected but still there. Hopefully it works because the car has...
