Legend of Zelda competition (UK Only)

Legend of Zelda competition (UK Only)

Nintendo UK are running two competitions, one to simply win a copy of the game when it comes out, the other is to win a massive bundle (pictured above) if you answer one very simple question about the Legend of Zelda universe.

Avengers: Endgame Review

Avengers: Endgame Review

Okay, so this is going to be a tough film to talk about. How do you talk about a film without spoiling anything when pretty much the only things not worth spoiling were in the trailers anyway.

Endgame is big. Really big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think Lord of the Rings was a slog, but that’s just peanuts to Endgame.

As one of my...

How to Train Your Dragon 3 - Review

How to Train Your Dragon 3 - Review

Because I’m not typing the full title. Sue me.

The How to Train Your Dragon franchise doesn’t seem to get the respect it deserves. The first one was a solid family adventure film with a protagonist that changed his world by being smart and compassionate, rather than with violence. It also side-stepped the usual Father and Son tension such films have in a fresh way, and generally surprised me....

New Cards Against Humanity Decks!!!

New Cards Against Humanity Decks!!!

Cards Against Humanity are releasing the decks that appeared at PAX and for their Eight Sensible Gifts for Hannukah event, renaming them the Geek and Jew decks, respectively.

They’ve also made a $25 Donald Trump Bug Out Bag that has, unsurprisingly, sold out.

And it turns out that the food deck, which last time I checked was US only is now available in at least the UK store.

Wreck It Ralph 2 Review: The Power of Toxic Friendships.

Wreck It Ralph 2 Review: The Power of Toxic Friendships.

This is an odd one.

I’ve got a lot of love for the original Wreck It Ralph, it’s a story of a mid life crisis draped in the most blatant geek culture pandering I’ve ever witnessed. But it worked because the story is compelling and the references are simple window dressing.

But that film told a fairly well contained story that didn’t really leave room for more, other than more geeky references -...

Deadpool 2 Review & Discussion

Deadpool 2 Review & Discussion

The first Deadpool film felt like a breath of fresh air, it’s R rating and surface disregard for the conventions of modern superhero movie narratives made it a cultural touchstone, a film you just had to see because it wasn’t like anything you’d ever seen before.

And then they made a sequel.

It’s tough to take a film as successful as Deadpool and simply churn out a sequel. It was a...

Towel Day. Or: How to Title a Piece About The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Without Saying "Don't Panic!"

Towel Day. Or: How to Title a Piece About The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Without Saying "Don't Panic!"

May 25th is Towel Day, the day fans celebrate the life and works of Douglas Adams; notably The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (May 25th is also the day Star Wars came out, a year before the Radio series first broadcast).

To celebrate, I thought it would be interesting to ask one simple question: How would you remake The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy?

For me, and I’ve given this...

Avengers: Infinity War Discussion

Avengers: Infinity War Discussion

There is a saying; either do something original and make it rough or do something ordinary and make it perfect.

I say this, because Avengers: Infinity War is unlike anything we’ve seen before, so for the points it gains for being something new, it loses a few in the mix.

There’s never been a film like this, a film that’s been - on some level - in production for 10 years, a film that’s built on...

Honouring the Past whilst Looking to the Future - A Sonic Mania review.

Honouring the Past whilst Looking to the Future - A Sonic Mania review.

There’s a saying in the Sonic fan community; no matter how bad the game is, the soundtrack will always be good.

So what does it say for Sonic Mania if I had already loved the music in it’s trailers?

In the ultimate concession that they have absolutely no idea what they’re doing, Sega handed over their iconic mascot to the fans. Now, given my contempt for pretty much any fan that...

Why I Think Gravity Falls is the Greatest Sci-Fi Show of all Time.

Why I Think Gravity Falls is the Greatest Sci-Fi Show of all Time.

In reaction to this open thread last week, here’s my contribution to this little project.

Note: I’ve decided to keep my piece spoiler free but I’m OK with spoilery discussions in the comments.

Gravity Falls.

I think Gravity Falls is the greatest Sci-Fi show of all time because it reminds me of what I think good Sci-Fi is all about; taking the human condition, tweaking it and seeing...

Gravity Falls Final Episode Reactions/Discussion

Gravity Falls Final Episode Reactions/Discussion

So, after all this time, over 4 years and 40 episodes, suddenly, Summer is over in Gravity Falls.

Obviously it goes without saying, but spoilers from here on in.

Aside from one really easy get out towards the end, absolutely brilliant. Gravity Falls has definitely stuck it’s landing. You know that Hirsch is completely comitted to character when, in a 40 minute episode, the main villain is...

Gravity Falls DVD Release Petition.

Gravity Falls DVD Release Petition.

Alex Hirsch, creator of Gravity Falls, has made his views of a DVD release abundantly clear.

The DVD thing is pretty frustrating. I sent like an 8 page letter to the folks in charge of merchandise basically BEGGING them to do a full season blue-ray with commentary and the works. (Because that’s what I would want if I was a customer)Their response was: Too pricey. A 20 episode set with features...

Batman V. Superman Jumps on another Bandwagon

Batman V. Superman Jumps on another Bandwagon

Turns out that Batman V. Superman The Fight for Custody is going to get an R-rated Director’s Cut

The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has put out a bulletin highlighting movies that they’ve recently rated, and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition” has been rated R for “sequences of violence.” The distributor is “Warner Home Entertainment”, so it sounds like we’re...

History of Rock

History of Rock

I’ve posted about the work of ithacaaudio in open threads before, they’ve done some amazing mashups that are almost always amazing.

And they’ve just released a 15 minute long video full of references to some of the greatest rock songs ever made in a (very) rough timeline.

Just had to share it.

Independence Day: Resurgence review/thoughts

Independence Day: Resurgence review/thoughts

Just back from watching the sequel to Independence Day and whilst it’s - unsurprisingly - nowhere near as good as it’s predecessor, it’s a better sequel than I was expecting with some great moments but there’s a lot of stupid stuff that drags it down.

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say that Resurgence started out as a non-Indepedence Day script that got shoe-horned into the ID universe,...

Ghostbusters review/reaction thread.

Ghostbusters review/reaction thread.

I just back from seeing the film and whilst it was clearly never going to be better than the original, it’s a decent, entertaining update that just about walks the line between being too referential to the original and carving it’s own path (with the exception of the third act).

It feels a whole lot like The Force Awakens in many respects, retelling the original story with a few tweaks to make...

Hardcore Henry - Way Late Review

Hardcore Henry - Way Late Review

I’ve been meaning to watch this film for a long time but it had such a limited release I never got the chance to see it in the cinema, so when I saw it was out on DVD, I had to buy it and goddamn, I love it.

Take the equally awesome Shoot ‘Em Up, ramp up the gore a lot, whilst removing a lot of the charm and slick action, add a dash of Chronicle, drop Sharlto Copley into the mix (proving that...

HarmonQuest

HarmonQuest

Just finished watching the first series (10 episodes) of Dan Harmon’s other animated show, HarmonQuest and it’s a basically the D&D segment from his HarmonTown podcast, but with special guest stars and animated segments where appropriate. It’s available behind a subscription to SeeSo (or elsewhere, *wink wink, nudge nudge*) and it’s a nice little show that hasn’t yet been consumed...

Megamind Review - buried by Minions

Megamind Review - buried by Minions

It’s no secret that there’s such a thing as Duelling Movies , and it’s always been a fascinating concept to me, that two different creative teams can create two different stories based around pretty much the same premise and get totally different results. It’s possibly the closest we’ll get to treating movie making as a science.

I was thinking about this as a film I consider to be an underrated...
