Scooter therapy, dealing with some serious shit.

Scooter therapy, dealing with some serious shit.

I’ve been dealing with some pretty heavy stuff lately. Those of you in Chicagoland may have heard about the two teenage boys who were shot to death by their mother last week, who then set their house on fire and shot herself. The younger of those two boys was a recent student of mine. He was a damn good kid. Always willing to help others, and funny as hell too. The world was a better place...

Adventures in camper selling

Adventures in camper selling

I’ve been trying to sell the avocado green ‘78 Apache Wareagle my buddy and I bought together a couple years ago, and affectionately called The Death Camper for a couple months now. We had our fun with it, and want to go another direction for track camping in the future. Typical CL/FB Marketplace stuff. Tons of questions, multiple accepted offers that went nowhere, Thursday I even had a buyer...

DOTS

DOTS

Recently I’ve been seeing this 67-72 Chevy around town. I got an up close look at the liquor store a few days ago (I was buying a couple 4-packs of my favorite root beer, and stuffing them under the seat of my scooter).

Its a big block (402) Camper Special. I spoke briefly with the owner. It came from LA, which is why the body is so.... Still in existence.

Dig the cubby hole. He opened it for...

I built a thing (with a lot of help)

I built a thing (with a lot of help)

My friends and I have been talking about building this deck on their house for several years. They’ve helped out a bunch on our house whenever we needed extra help, so it feels nice to be able to repay that labor. I haven’t worked on a deck in years, and this is the first one I’ve ever built where I was in charge. I’m proud of the results.

It’s been hot as balls, I’m badly sunburned on my...

Dots: a boat-tail boat

It’s a nice 20-footer, but up close it’s a bondo bucket.

DOTS: A work survivor

DOTS: A work survivor

This will probably seem strange to those who don’t live in the rust belt, but the only GMT-400s you see at work anymore around here, are rusty beat up piles. I’ve seen this at least 19 year old Chevy 2500 pulling FedEx duty a couple times now. It looks really clean. It makes me happy every time I see it.

Good riddance

Good riddance

Last year I bought an ‘87 Honda Helix , with plans to run it in the Gambler 500 Illinois. While it ran and rode the day I bought it, after it sat for a couple months it would not start. When I switched the ignition on, gas was getting pushed right out of the carb and onto the ground. Well, parts being cheap, we commenced doing the exact wrong thing and started throwing parts at it. A coil,...

Obituary code.

Obituary code.

I have now seen the exact same two vague phrases in obituaries for acquaintances (for lack of a better description) of mine, both of whom died quite young.

The first one was for a former coworker who died in her early 40's some months ago. She was a nice person who had a pain pill problem, and was fired. That’s all I’ll say about her. Her obituary contained the following phrases:

“Died at home...

This made me happier than it really should

This made me happier than it really should

This is where the pump clicked itself off. I would have been even happier had I been paying cash, but there were only $3 in my pocket.

In case you're wondering why I only bought 8.8 gallons of gas, when my truck has a 25 gallon tank, it's because Illinois is raising its gas tax 19 cents a gallon tomorrow, so I topped both vehicles off tonight.

I’m waiting outside the liquor store while my wife buys cheap wine. This fine machine pulled up. My daughter wants “the Jeep.”

Wagon Wednesday: '65 Chevelle 2-door

Wagon Wednesday: '65 Chevelle 2-door

Wagon Wednesday is my favorite day for LaLD. I've been eager to show this one off. It's a Playing Mantis era JL '65 Chevelle 2-door wagon. I gotta say, I wish the 2-door wagon would make a comeback in real-life. I imagine that will happen right about the time they find Jim Morrison and Kurt Kobain living happily together on that deserted island.

I do wish it didn't have this silly deco on...

Greetings from Meal-e-walk-ay

Greetings from Meal-e-walk-ay

Actually, I’m not there anymore. I spent Wednesday-Saturday there for training at Milwaukee School of Engineering. The training was for a Flight & Space class I have to teach next year. I didn’t have much time for fun. I explored the city a bit on the scooter(it was nice), but I was doing homework until 11 each night and up at 6am to start it all over again.

I did manage to stop at the Harley...

And just like that ...

And just like that ...

She’s gone. I’m gonna miss that little bugger.

I took her to Victory Auto Wreckers after school today. I hadn’t been there in probably 20 years. Anyone who has ever lived in Chicagoland, will remember their classic TV commercial. I bet its on youtube, its pretty funny.

Anyways, the place is really close to my work, and it’s a lot nicer than it used to be. The whole yard is paved now, and they...

I'm sick of this crap

I'm sick of this crap

I expect the occasional -20 windchill in January or maybe February.  This is March.  I’m so done with this winter.

Mini Hawl: Race car and tow truck

Mini Hawl: Race car and tow truck

Despite the fact that I'm downsizing the collection (and I added a bunch more since I first posted the list), I couldn't stop myself from picking up two more Hot Wheels from my freshly stocked Walmart last night. In fairness, I had seven cars in the cart, and I only left with two. Of course, I tore them out of the cards outside the store, so I could smuggle them into the house without...

Any Chicago-ish area Oppos want a vice?

Any Chicago-ish area Oppos want a vice?

I saved these vices from the scrapyard several years ago. It’s time to clear some extra stuff out of the garage, and bring in some cash. They’re good old school American made vices, from Wilton and Columbia. Oppo discount applies, if you’re in driving distance of O’Hare airport and want a vice. I’m not shipping these monsters!

I finally got one! With bonus new tool!

I finally got one! With bonus new tool!

A couple years ago I murdered my Harbor Frieght trailer by overloading it. I had long since gotten my money’s worth out of it, so I drilled off the ID plate, took off my license plate, and put it on the curb for the scrappers.

Ever since then, I’ve been looking for a very cheap trailer to replace it. I’ve come close a couple times, but the cheap ones are always either too far away, or get...

Ugh, this is depressing me

Ugh, this is depressing me

I’m sure some of you are already stick of me complaining about my truck rusting, but too bad. Revel in my misery!

This winter has been incredibly unkind to my poor truck. This is the passenger rocker.

The driver’s side is even worse.

I feel like it has gotten exponentially worse, just in the last week. I was going to take it to the car wash today, but I’m scared to see how much less truck I...

Moar cabinets!

Moar cabinets!

This was a really productive weekend. In addition to buying my wife a Vespa , I also brought my father-in-law’s giant 36" glass tube TV to the recycling center, and managed to watch the entire IndyCar race at Pocono, despite the 2-hour delay after Robert Wikens knocked down part of the catch fence (so glad to hear he’s alive!).

It spite of all this, I managed to install most of the rest of the...
