Idiot Fest 2019: 350ish glorious miles on a scooter in one weekend

Idiot Fest 2019: 350ish glorious miles on a scooter in one weekend

The plan was rooted in the Gambler 500-Illinois. My buddy Bill (he now lurks Oppo, occasionally commenting under the name SpecsGTP) ran that two years ago with me in the RallyMetro . Last year we did it on scooters , and lapsed Opponaut Birddog joined us in his 300k+ mile GMT-800 Suburban and ran the crucial position of blocker behind our 50mph moving butts. This year we had all held the...

Idiot Fest 2019

Idiot Fest 2019

We got a late start from Shullsburg, and did not make it to Rochester, MN as we planned. We still rode 185 miles today on some amazing roads. We’re spending the night in Lacrosse, where we managed to get before the sun went down. Only “problem” today, is that it was the coldest day we’ve had in months. No matter, it was a great day.

The good news is that Birddog got his ‘78 C10 into fighting shape finally last night, and my scooter is ready to rock for Idiot Fest 2019 . The bad news is that my buddy Bill has had a major setback getting his Chinesium 150cc scooter into shape. After replacing a valve spring and the carburetor, as well as increasing the size of the fuel line and deleting 1 or 2 fuel filters, the engine is...

This cat

This cat

He greets you at the door almost every time (sometimes he’s napping). All he wants is some pets. He has recently developed the adorable habit of coming into the bedroom to meow good night when we put each of our daughters to bed. He’s always been a good cat, but recently he’s mellowed significantly. Honestly, we could not ask for a better pet. He’s such a good boy, and so patient with our...

Oppoinions needed: storage edition

Oppoinions needed: storage edition

My buddy and I are going to be embarking on another long scooter adventure, like last year when we did the Gambler 500-Illinois on scooters. The Gambler is out of range for us this year, but we still want to go adventure. We will probably be riding 400 miles over the weekend this time. This year, I have a rear rack on my scooter. I’m too cheap to buy an actual top case, so I’ve got two...

The care and feeding of a full faced helmet visor

The care and feeding of a full faced helmet visor

So, I finally took the plunge on a full faced helmet last week. I know, I should have done that a long time ago, but nonetheless, I’ve got one now. Frankly, I like it.

So here’s the rub. The visor is already filthy. I’m wondering what’s the best way to clean it, without screwing it up over time?

Not everyone gets it

Not everyone gets it

But those that do, really get it. I crossed paths today with an older dude (50's?) Riding a chopper. Not a stupid OCC stretched rediculous style bike, but an old school 60's style chopper. The kind you can actually ride. He had a sun beaten look to him, that suggested he spends a lot of time on two wheels. Now that grizzled looking chopper riding helmetless dude and I couldn’t be much farther...

Scooter tools

Scooter tools

I picked up this tiny tool set this weekend to carry in my scooter. Also tossed in an actual 1/4" ratchet and a driver handle for those bits. This should take care of just about any problems I may have while riding.

Since we can’t make the Gambler 500-Illinois this year, my buddy and I are planning to take another long scooter ride like we did last year. Will we be riding 492 miles again? Not...

EEEEEEEEEDIOT!

EEEEEEEEEDIOT!

The weather has been gorgeous this week, but I haven’t been able to ride my scooter, because the stator isn’t charging the battery, and the part is back ordered until mid-September. It’s been driving me completely insane.

Today I realized that I am an idiot. It took me nearly two months to decide to figure out why my battery was being slowly killed, during which I rode hundreds of miles. What,...

Ah, there's the FP I remember

Ah, there's the FP I remember

I never would've guessed a year ago that I'd be defending Santino Ferrucci. Apparently this grey (I replied before I took the screenshot) member of the rage-mob thinks I should be ground into dirt for that. Whatever, I'm bored, let's dance son.

My scooter by like ...

My scooter by like ...

I’ve been riding the scooter to school everyday that the weather cooperates. I’ve been noticing that it starts weaker and weaker each time. It was noticeable enough that I started carrying jumper cables. Well, yesterday, on a gorgeous morning never more perfect for scooter riding, the inevitable happened. Slow crank, no start. I drove the truck to school (which, in hindsight, I should have...

Obligatory Brake Post

Obligatory Brake Post

The front brakes on my truck started hitting the squealers a few weeks ago. Frankly I’m shocked they lasted this long. They were last done in October of 2011, at 69k miles. Eight years and 75k miles on truck brakes, is not too shabby!

Anyways, I knew they needed to be done sooner than later. This weekend I took an impromptu trip up to Road America with my daughters, to see the IMSA race. I...

Moar kittay content

Moar kittay content

This is Kit Kat. She belongs to my buddy Bill. He’s the one who rode shotgun when I gambled the RallyMetro, and rode a clapped out Helix with me while I gambled my Zuma 125 last year. I’m at his house to do the front brakes on my truck, but that’s not important. What’s important is kitty cat. She is very fluffy.

Don’t stick Legos up your nose.

Yep. Parenthood is some weird wild stuff.

She’s fine, BTW. We only discovered what she had done, when she sneezed and it came flying out. Gadamn it kid.

Cat in a tub, aka dick in a box, for your time.
