Changing Air Filters to Rebuilding Calipers, a short story

Changing Air Filters to Rebuilding Calipers, a short story

So, before I bought this E46, I made a promise to myself that I’d use the fact that this is a car that will have typically higher repair / parts costs as a reason to attempt to do the majority of the work myself.

That said, I didn’t have much experience on directly working on cars outside of maybe 2 oil changes, some basic air filter / cabin air filter changes and swapping out radios / sound...

Replaced my Auto Trans Fluid, but had a problem - need opinions

UPDATE: Got the screw out, put new in.

Like the title states, I replaced the trans fluid in my ‘02 325i (GM Trans). When I was putting the pan back on, one of the bolts that was in the kit either was overtorqued (didn’t feel like it) or defective (they were slightly different) and the head snapped off, leaving just the body in the car. I tried drilling it out, but didn’t want to make the issue...

I love my car, but I need to figure out this rumbling noise...

So, had the E46 back in the shop a week or so ago to hopefully (finally) diagnose the “subwoofer-esque” noise I’m heading at 55-60 MPH. It’s not a vibration, it’s a deep HMMMMMMMM, which is what’s making it difficult.

Here’s a quick pic I got over the weekend driving around with a friend-

The shop took a look and said it’s likely the other 2 bent wheels. At this point, I’ve had all 4 wheels...

Annnnnnd 1st potential issue with the E46 - Rumbling / Vibration over 55mph?

Annnnnnd 1st potential issue with the E46 - Rumbling / Vibration over 55mph?

That was fast.

It’s not that bad, but I figure I’d catch it early. Description of issue as follows. I’m sure one of you will have a decent insight.

Getting it out on the highway today, I noticed something that I didn’t notice right after I bought it last week - everything is super smooth until about 55mph, where I start to hear (and sort of feel) a rumbling in the car. It seems to be worst at...

Oppo, talk me out of this.

I haven’t really owned a car in 2 or 3 years at this point (besides my 5 month stint with that Civic), and am constantly finding a small void in my life. I came across this:

Besides it being an auto :(, I’m damn tempted. Low mileage, and the guy lives in my area. I walked by it the other day, with the for-sale sign on the window. Looks like all it needs is some A/C work, which to...

I (think) I Figured Out The Vibration Problem (And other BMW notes)

Freshly back from my trip, I brought Jerry (this what we’ve decided the car’s name is), my 2002 325i in for an oil change, and to investigate the 55-65mph rumble I was experiencing.

The oil change was about what I expected, a bit more expensive, but it’s fully synthetic and about what I paid for full synth in my Focus ST.

The shop also mentioned that the rear wheels had some decently sized bends...

Oppo, I did something against your recommendation.

Oppo, I did something against your recommendation.

I bought it. I bought the E46 I looked at last week.

It was too low mileage, too close to home, and too maintained to pass up.

2002 325i, Auto, 79k miles.

I’ve had it all of 2 hours, and I like it. It’s my 1st RWD (Focus ST was very front, and Wrangler doesn’t count). I paid $3300 for it. Some deets:

The Good:

It’s in pretty damn good shape, apart from normal wear and tear. Needs a good bath, but...

The Struggle Of Finding A Good Indie Shop [UPDATE]

The Struggle Of Finding A Good Indie Shop [UPDATE]

Would love for someone to check me on this, to know if this is a fair reason to be stressed / mildly upset.

Ever since the shop that my dad’s gone to for the last 25 years closed down, finding a good, reputable shop in Queens has been a crapshoot. Here’s my current story.

So, to start, I did research and found this shop on google / yelp - they had lots of good reviews, and on their website they...

Spent Saturday Fixing Things!

Spent Saturday Fixing Things!

My e46 had needed new front rotors since I’ve bought her - they were slightly warped, but there’s so much brake material left that I figured I’d just need new rotors. So yesterday, I replaced them. It was a super easy process, and my first time tearing into brakes.

The hardest part was the set screw on the driver’s side, that required a torch and some real muscle to get off. Got everything back...

Everything Wrong With My 2002 BMW 325i (And maybe you can help!)

Everything Wrong With My 2002 BMW 325i (And maybe you can help!)

It’s been about a month since I picked up my 1 owner, low mileage, close to my apartment BMW 325i, and so far, I’m a huge fan of it. Here’s a picture to catch your attention. I need to take some interior photos. (NO WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH WHOOOO)

Right after buying it, I immediately had an oil change done at a local indie shop, because the P/O only drove about 8k miles in the last 8-9...

Has Anyone Rented From Hertz Adrenaline Collection?

Has Anyone Rented From Hertz Adrenaline Collection?

Headed to RDU this weekend for a wedding, and have 2 reserations booked - one “Muscle Car Adrenaline Collection”, which can be either a Mustang GT, Camaro SS, or Challenger R/T (I’d prefer the Mustang or Camaro), and a basic generic car.

Anyone have experience with these?

looks like I stumbled upon a commercial shoot on Crosby and Price during my morning commute. Sexy ass car. Didn't have time to wait and listen for the startup though.

Pretty sure it’s the same owner of the one that I’ve seen at new Canaan c&c. Georgia plates.

I might do a thing today. talk me out of, or into it.

Update: it was a great car, I just can’t justify it

So, ever since we sold the Civic and reverted back to mass transit or rentals when getting out of the city, I’ve felt a hole. I miss not having to take an Uber or hour and a half subway-to-bus trip to LGA to pick up a rental, or spending 3 hours on a cramped Trans-Bridge bus; I miss having a car.

And like every one of us, I spend tireless...

Thanks Oppo, now I have a Suburban for a week

And got LUCKY with parking. I originally squeezed into a MUCH smaller space, but decided I’d be stuck if any car around me moved (like, a 15 point back and forth for the parallel park) and then found this oversized spot that was perfect and close to my apt. I’ll write a review after our road trip with it.

Initial impressions: it’s big. It’s. Big. Second largest vehicle I’ve driven, first being...

A Rental Car Dillema Only Oppo Will Understand - Help Me Decide

A Rental Car Dillema Only Oppo Will Understand - Help Me Decide

So, next weekend - Memorial Day weekend - a few friends and I are road tripping from NYC, to a friend’s place in Cape Cod, MA. After analyzing all our choices, renting a car [read: large SUV] is our cheapest (and most fun) option. Being the car lover of the group, I jumped on the opportunity to pick & drive the vehicle. Here’s where the dilemma comes in.

Originally, we’d rented a Suburban from...
