Been transitioning a bit from primarily automotive photography to portraiture. A rather high end portrait photographer recently moved to town and we started shooting together. He loved my car and wanted to use it in a shoot having never done anything automotive before. It was a good time.

Bike guys making do

Bike guys making do

I’ve had my eye out for a seat for my custom Honda Shadow project for a while now and finally saw an old Sportster seat pop up on CL for $50. Great! That’s by far the cheapest seat I’ve seen and the Shadow is a Sportster clone anyways so it should be roughly the right size!

Nope.

That right there is a softail seat.

Time to cut.

Got the foam and pan re-shaped. Need to go find an upholstery...

It lives! Sort of. Jet kit gets here tomorrow. I need to get some shorter shocks, make a proper bracket for that seat, and re-curve the fender so it matches the curve of the supports... somehow.

Bonus pic of wiring hell. This is as clean as I could get it. All of this usually stretches backwards 2 feet to the tail of the bike which no longer exists so instead it kinda... exists.

Bonus bonus...

Transformation Tuesday

New seat and rear end on the Shadow. Needs lowered a solid 2 inches in the rear. Need to make new seat bracketry, as well. That seat doesn’t flow very well on the brackets that came with it.

Progress!

Progress!

New china seat arrived. Need to build some new brackets for it in an attempt to move it 2 inches down and back and get rid of the springs. Even at its current elevated height at least I can flat-foot this thing.

Later this week: new rear fender and I’ll make some new sub-harnesses so I can clean up the tail wiring!

All of my wires just barely reach for the rear turns and such. Going to make...

Today in Motorcycles

Today in Motorcycles

Since my bike is broken (again) I went to the local Royal Einfield / Triumph dealership that was having a demo days of two RE models and rode them. Then my buddy came over with his 2019 Goldwing with 10 miles on it.

This thing looks amazing. Sadly I don’t fit on it all that well.

I fit on this quite a bit better. Triumph makes some absolutely beautiful bikes. Pity they’re so expensive.

This is...

Pontighini Couniero

So... I love this more than a legitimate Countach. This is a 1986 Fiero that has been stretched and bequeathed a 1:1 replica fiberglass body molded from an actual Countach, with an 80s IROC Camaro engine dropped in mated to an OEM Pontiac 4 speed. OEM Lamborghini wheels, glass, and paint. The fit and finish makes for a 10-footer that I think would fool a vast, vast majority of people...

New car

No better way to get used to a new car than a 3 hour drive home. Picked up this 2008 Mazda Miata PRHT yesterday for the princely bargain of $5500 from a nice lady in Oklahoma City. It drives perfectly and I am ecstatic. Here’s the nitty gritty:

160k miles

Current owner had it since 3k miles

Interior reupholstered with Katzkin leather

New bilstein shocks

New Pilot Sport A/S rubber

Oil changed...

Few shots from Rallyx. I was racing in the RWD class so I couldn’t shoot the RWD cars, sadly.

Video of my fastest lap in the IS300 at Rallycross. Probably my last rallycross in this car. My mechanical sympathy can’t handle the beating that this car gets on these courses. I utterly nuked a sway bar end link. Unfortunately this is a dirty lap as you can clearly hear where I thunk over a cone. The beeping is the traction control computer losing its mind when I get sideways. As...

Will this material object help calm my depression? Probably for a little. Unfortunately I lack the necessary legal tender. Whomp whomp.

Went out to rural Kansas and did some shooting. Doesn’t much look like Kansas but... there ya go. The light painting shot is probably my favorite thing I’ve ever taken.

Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results

Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results

This is, I am told. The definition of insanity. So let’s do the same thing again and see if it works this time.

My 1980 and 1981 Honda CX500s with bad engines with to a guy in Missouri who wrecked his brother’s CX500 and was looking for a clean bike to put his brother’s engine in. In exchange I got this.

1983 Honda Shadow VT750c. A 1-year oddity in the US. 750cc 45 degree v-twin with a...

Final thoughts on the new 2019 Kia Soul after 1,300 miles in one:

Massive, MASSIVE improvement over the outgoing model. The difference in interior build quality can’t be exaggerated and it rivals Infiniti quite handily. Yes, Kia interior better than Infiniti. Low bar? Certainly. But worthy of note.

The sound system was poorly equalized by whoever rented this previously. Once fixed the system in...
