New Hobby - Postcrossing

New Hobby - Postcrossing

My friend has been participating on the website Postcrossing where you exchange postcards with other members around the world. To receive a postcard you must have sent one that was received and registered on the site, this way there is better participation. The website will give you a random member’s mailing address when you request to send a new postcard.

Honestly, I probably wouldn’t have...

Trading Spaces Reboot

Trading Spaces Reboot

Did anyone else watch the Trading Spaces reboot tonight?

It’s the same concept as before: pick a room to be redesigned and executed by your neighbor and a mystery designer with no input or control. They’ve upped the budget to $2000/room. They had a season preview at the end and it looks like they brought back a lot of the original designers and that there will also be a few new ones.

Of course...

Saturday Night Anti-Social

Saturday Night Anti-Social

How is everyone tonight? It’s a dreary rainy weekend in the Philly Metro Area.

We moved two weeks ago and we are still half in boxes. A bunch of hand-me-down furniture was gotten rid of in our move but we haven’t been able to replace all of the pieces right away.

While we wait for a new couch to be delivered we are using an inflatable mattress on the floor.

My big achievement today was...

Sunday PM OT

It seems quiet here today so I thought I’d put up an open thread. How is everyone’s day going?

Night of the Twisters

Night of the Twisters

There are a ridiculous number of tornado watches and warnings tonight. Basically all of Pennsylvania is under a tornado watch tonight, with a reported tornado in Scranton.

I follow some weather services on Twitter and Kansas looked like it was getting hit hard. Oklahoma has some news as well.

Now there is a tornado warning for part of New Jersey and New York.

Hope you are all staying safe this...

YouTube Stuff

I just came across this YouTuber, Sam Johnson, who is a vocal teacher. I’m not a singer but I do have some musical background so I’ve found a lot of his constructive critiques/reactions really interesting and thought I would share.

Share any YouTube videos or channels you like.

Weird Childhood Beliefs

Weird Childhood Beliefs

What are some weird things you believed as a child that you essentially came up with on your own? Active imagination? Just weird kid logic?

When I was like pre-school aged and probably a bit younger I slept in the tightest fetal position because I had somehow convinced myself there was a lion that lived at the end of my bed. I thought he would come out at night and eat my feet. I don’t think I...

Growing Up and Living Space

Growing Up and Living Space

I’m in my late 20s but there are still weird moments where I’m like, “Wow, this feels like real adulthood.” Like being surprised when I got approved with a nice credit line for a hard to get credit card but then realizing “oh yeah, I’ve been making payments in time for several years with my starter card, loans, and financed a mattress before.”

The latest incident of “Wow, this is adulthood” is...

Bridesmaid Gift Brainstorm

Bridesmaid Gift Brainstorm

Does anyone have suggestions for bridesmaids gifts? I was thinking of getting them curated giftboxes like on FoxBox but it feels kind of limited. At the same time I am also burnt out and the idea of going out and going to multiple stores to assemble gifts is also exhausting.

Do you have any gift box services you’d recommend? Do you know anything particularly nice in the $75 to $100/person...

Noisy Neighbors

Noisy Neighbors

So we live in an apartment complex and obviously from time to time we will hear our neighbors. I think we’re pretty tolerant of noise in general. If it’s during the day and reasonable, or a short duration, or obviously like event related (some sports games our upstairs neighbor gets worked up over) we generally just ignore it.

However, our direct neighbors fight a lot. We’ve made one formal...

Wedding Registry Items Suggestions

Wedding Registry Items Suggestions

Hi all! I thought making the gift registry would be one of the fun parts of wedding planning but we are having a hard time adding things to the list. Most of our friends will probably just give us checks but older family members tend to think of money as tacky/impersonal so the registry is mostly for their benefit.

PiranhaGuy and I have been living together for almost 4 years though and are in...

Saturday Night Antisocial

Saturday Night Antisocial

Here is your open thread!

Today I learned that early Wheel of Fortune contestants didn’t get cash prizes but instead had to shop with their prize money every round they won. I am a 1990 Millennial so I definitely don’t remember this being a thing. Apparently ceramic animals were frequently featured.

Brand Loyalty?

Brand Loyalty?

So there are a lot of articles about how after the 2008 market crash nobody is really loyal to brand names anymore, especially Millenials. Here is an NPR article about it.

Brand Loyalty: Can A Label Make You Listen?

What was the last song you listened to just because of the record label that released it?

Regional Holiday Music

Regional Holiday Music

Do you have any holiday music that is specific to your city or region? This morning on my way to work I was listening to WXPN which is a local Philadelphia radio station that plays a lot of independent music. This morning they played a new single by locals Roberta Faceplant and Drew Parker called Merry Grittmas, for the Philadelphia Flyers’ mascot Gritty. I can’t find it online because it is...

Are Professional Certificates Worth It?

Are Professional Certificates Worth It?

My current company will pay for further education 100% as long as it is relevant to your job, you earn a certain grade, and that you stay at the company for a proportional amount of time afterwards.

I don’t think I want to jump into the time commitment that is a Masters program right away, but I have seen some professional certification programs that could be relevant and could get my feet wet...

Sunday Morning Check In

Sunday Morning Check In

Hi all. What is on your plate this Sunday?

It is abnormally warm and humid for October in my area. It looks like this high pressure ridge will break in the later half of the week but it will still be near 80 degrees Fahrenheit until late in the week in the mid-Atlantic /weather nerd. It’s going to make it gross while canvassing today. I’m expecting Republicans to be more hostile than usual...

Death Anxiety

Death Anxiety

So every now and then I struggle with becoming fixated on death and my anxiety surrounding it. I first had anxiety about death when I was about 5 or 6 which was prompted by the child’s prayer Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep which made me afraid of dying in my sleep and an uncertainty of what happens after you die.

I don’t know if this new bout is being brought on by getting closer to 30 and losing...

Fun Times While Canvassing

Fun Times While Canvassing

Today I canvassed for my district’s Democratic candidate for House representative. Overall it was fine, it was my first time volunteering for a campaign. I live in a very conservative area that has been written off as a given for Republicans candidates previously.

Aside from support from registered Democrats and some independents there were a few Republicans who were strong supporters and at...

Twitter Recommendations

Twitter Recommendations

My Twitter has been overwhelmed with whatever the current political headline is lately and I’d like to diversify my feed a bit. What non-political non-news accounts do you recommend?

Here is my small contribution:

@womensart1 - Shares art, both historical and contemporary, by women

@TheBloggess - Author Jenny Lawson, wrote Let’s Pretend this Never Happened and Furiously Happy.

@DollyParton - It’s...
