But This Is Where I POOP!

But This Is Where I POOP!

The land adjacent to ours has been untouched and unused except for some trails in the 11 years we’ve lived here, and by the looks of it, probably since the mid-80's. But the owner passed away and the family is doing some logging on the property. We’re also getting at least one new house on our quiet dead-end road with just 5 houses now - all on the same side, opposite this forested land.

Our...

It’s not the cleanest example, but I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a RHD Skyline in person. So here we are. I love it.

Also. Come on, there’s no curb to fear and the driver is ON THAT SIDE, no excuse for the terrible parking job.

I’d say the owner hasn’t had it very long, based on the plate number. And while it isn’t perfect, it looks largely unmolested. I hope it stays that way, but I’m pretty...

Eleven Years Ago Today

Eleven Years Ago Today

The weather in late August into early September in 2008 was beautiful. 10 days in a row, perfect. The weather on September 7th was also beautiful, and was like that for another week straight. However, there was a hurricane plowing along up the coast, much like it is today, and the forecast was for light winds but torrential rains on September 6th, the Saturday after Labor Day. Our wedding...

I Have Some Questions

I Have Some Questions

There’s no engine in it, for the record. Mostly, I’d like to know how they got it on there, and/or how they’re getting it off.

Help My Sister Buy a Car

Help My Sister Buy a Car

Pic unrelated. Eye candy, for your time. Keep reading. No, she is not buying a AMG wagon.

My sister needs a new car. In her own way, she’s narrowed the search to a Lexus RX and a Jeep Grand Cherokee, budget seems to cap out in the low 20's but isn’t totally rigid. $25k would be too much, but she was sending me some links of JGC’s in the $16-17k range, so that’s kind of a big range. She’s in...

AMC Huts: Lonesome Lake

AMC Huts: Lonesome Lake

Last weekend we took the kids to the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Lonesome Lake Hut in the White Mountains. Sounds... exotic? Not really.

Lonesome Lake Hut at Cannon Mountain | AMC

With spectacular views of the Franconia Ridge across a pristine glacial lake, Lonesome Lake Hut…

Basically, it’s a cabin in the mountains that you hike to (one of eight run by the AMC); they provide a...

Very nice highboy Ford

Really excellent. Also, a truck that should be friends with mine:

Vanity plate (according to temp tags): OLYELR

Bonus! DOTRT - Down On The Railroad Tracks - some old former service vehicles, that are now just hobbyists, evidently. About 7 of them were traveling together. Strange hobby, but whatevs.

They all stopped and waited, then a couple of them got out to stop...

Keep Back 500 Feet - Extreme Cuteness

Keep Back 500 Feet - Extreme Cuteness

Been taking my son to the bus stop in the truck, it’s about 1200' of very quiet, dead-end road. In other words, 15 minutes to walk with a 5- and 7-year-old, but 3 minutes in the truck. I let them sit in the back on camp chairs with the dogs, they absolutely love it. We stop and pick up a neighbor on the way. Good times.

Drove This Last Night

Drove This Last Night

My neighbor’s parents bought this car new in 1988. It’s got about 57,000 miles on it now, and it’s just as fantastic as you’d imagine. Every time it’s been at my neighbor’s house, I’ve missed an opportunity for a spin, but last night I finally got to take it out with him. It’s delightful. The sounds, the analog controls, the smells, everything. I don’t think I need to convince anyone though....

DOTS 90's to the Maxxxx

DOTS 90's to the Maxxxx

Sweet Saab 900 Turbo at the grocery store yesterday. Looks like a nice survivor, didn’t see mileage though. On closer inspection, it was an automatic. BUT!

There was a CHER cassette tape on the dash!!! The plate also tells me that whoever owns it now hasn’t owned it for long.

I wonder if anyone noticed that the guy getting out of a bright lime-yellow antique truck was taking a picture of the...

Houselopnik Update - SUCCESS

Houselopnik Update - SUCCESS

I wrote last week about a drainage situation I’m trying to solve at my house, where I need to locate the end of a perimeter drain because it’s clogged. The problem is, we built a shed over where it likely used to daylight - just last year, no less. In any case, I’ve been digging around and tracing the pipe to see if I can figure out where it ends, so I can clear it.

I dug a hole about 12'...

How Was Your Weekend, Oppo?

How Was Your Weekend, Oppo?

I was going to work on the drainage situation at my house, but my friend can’t bring his tractor until next weekend. Yay, procrastinating! That’s where I’m a Viking! So instead I went for a long mountain bike ride Sunday morning while my wife took the kids shopping for some new clothes.

Didn’t take any pictures on trail because... it looks like the woods. We did try out a new loop though,...

A friend’s shiny diesel Ford for your time:

So our basement has a walk-out level with a big sliding door. We actually put a new one in recently, but that’s somewhat unrelated. The thing is, whoever landscaped the area back in 1987 didn’t really consider that the grade of the area outside of the door is higher than the basement floor. So guess what? If it rains hard enough, water can fill up...

DOTS - E46 Edition

DOTS - E46 Edition

Normally I wouldn’t post a pic of a non-M E46. But I couldn’t miss this (these):

In the 5 years I owned my E46 wagon, I think I only saw one the same color. This one ISN’T the same color, but it’s another blue that’s pretty close. And then, there’s that other one. I don’t know if it’s a wrap, but it’s very faded on the top-facing surfaces, compared to the lower doors and bumper.

That is all.

Looks Like I Picked The RIGHT Week To Quit Huffing Glue

Looks Like I Picked The RIGHT Week To Quit Huffing Glue

But seriously, over the summer I probably drink too much. It’s just all that Fun in the Sun (TM) and time at the lake, not to mention very late sunsets, warm nights, cool nights, rainy nights, ok I don’t really need an excuse to enjoy an adult beverage. It’s good I have a wife, kids, and job to keep myself in check because let’s just say I didn’t always have that check, and had some friends...

Really, Even On a Rental Car?

Actually, this is the one place those yellow protectors make sense, because renters are going to scrape the bumpers up. Might as well leave them on!

Also, Kizashi!

Opposite Lake

Opposite Lake

Not content to let our week at the lake go quietly, we spent the day there yesterday, too. Our plan was to go out with a friend for lunch at the island where she lives, or maybe in the boat. Then go to a beach, then home for dinner. Instead, we picked her up at 11:15 and went to another island, where we stayed... until 6:00pm. We ate and drank nearly everything we brought with us, but it was a...

Vacation/Staycation/Work...cation

Vacation/Staycation/Work...cation

We’re staying at a family-owned lake house this week but still going to work. That part sucks but at least when I get out of work, we go places like this:

Early 20th century boathouse with a badass slide. Some say you’re not a local until you’ve gone down that slide... head first... on your back... at night... naked. Yes, I have done that.

Turn around and this is the view the other way:

Then...

On Weather and Timing

On Weather and Timing

As we’re staring out at the water, it’s amazing how dead calm it is - like a swimming pool - and despite the fact that this week is among the very busiest on the lake, only a few boats have passed since I got home at 5:00pm. The thing is, when the forecast shows rain - and especially when it’s right - people just don’t go out. Not just when it’s raining; they tend to write off the boat for the...
