RIP Richard Williams

RIP Richard Williams

If you’ve studied animation, you’ve probably read Williams’ book. If you haven’t, you’ve probably seen some of his work.

I’m not a big fan of Williams, but his death is causing me to reflect a bit because of the current state of decline of 2D animation.

If you need to know, owners of GM products were the most conservative, with Ford 2nd, and Chrysler 3rd (interestingly though, for both Chrysler and Ford, less than half of the owners surveyed were conservative).

I did it again.

I did it again.

Saved another antique alarm clock. Actually, I think this Waterbury is not quite antique yet, it’s probably about 10 years younger than the Westclox I worked on a week ago. If my vague skimming of internet articles taught me something right, it is that Waterbury ended up becoming Timex, a company that is still around selling cheap stuff.

Anyway - this one was way, way, way dirtier than the...

Previous Owner Shenanigans.

Previous Owner Shenanigans.

No lock washers, no locknuts, and pretty sure those bolts are not strong enough to hold the wheel and knuckle to the suspension.

Some photos I shot through my 1950's Kinoflex (an inexpensive box camera made in Hong Kong, styled to look like an expensive TLR). Used Acros 100, and a yellow filter to try and keep the sky from washing out (yellow blocks blue light, so blue colors look darker in the photograph, useful on bright days for keeping the sky from appearing pure white).

Color photos from the Exa 1C, because...

100 year old Alarm Clock back to life.

100 year old Alarm Clock back to life.

I picked up this little Westclox America for $12 in filthy condition. After some cleaning and polishing it’s mostly shiny again. Pulled the guts out and wiped up some old dirt and oil with lighter fluid and Q-tips, then proceeded to put some tiny drops of oil wherever I could access bearings. The clock face was so fragile I didn’t disassemble it further, but either way it began ticking, and I...

Is NO TRAINS a magay thing

Is NO TRAINS a magay thing

I laughed.

Was trying to tell me donald was a blessing from God. I look at profile and see “NO TRAINS.” And burst out laughing.

I’m not sure if NO TRAINS has something to do with her marital status “Married-” (ie. she didn’t have a wedding dress or something???) or if trumpers just hate TRAINS. I’m going with the latter because it’s funnier, and it seems like the sort of arbitrary thing that...

Nice Day.

Nice Day.

Almost killed somebody today, when they stepped into the street without looking only 20 or 30 feet in front of my car. Luckily the person behind them pulled them back and I was paying attention. The car stopped about five feet past where they stood.

Hitting a pedestrian is one of my biggest fears, so I’m always looking for and aware of people on the side of the street. These two were not at a...

I know prices of old VW buses have gotten pretty high in the past several years, but $4,000 for one without a motor, title, or floor? Really? This isn’t even one of the rarer bodies. Are they really worth this much in this condition? (given VW prices lately I wouldn’t doubt somebody if they said yes - but it is pretty ridiculous).

On The Road For Another Year

On The Road For Another Year

Just because the car passed inspection doesn’t mean there isn’t lots of work to still be done though.

Getting the rear brakes healthy enough to pass the parking brake test revealed yet another brake problem, although not an entirely unexpected one. I replaced the front brake hoses when I had the engine out last year. I replaced one of the rear hoses when it started to leak earlier this year. I...

Daihatsu!

There are few old cars in Naha, but I spotted this Daihatsu Midget, reincarnated as a food stand (which unfortunately was not open).

Please, let's stop comparing car deaths to gun deaths.

Please, let's stop comparing car deaths to gun deaths.

“More people are killed in traffic accidents than are killed on purpose by deadly firearms - but nobody wants to regulate cars!” Traffic lights, speed limits, all manner of road signs, parking meters, driver licensing, registration, all manner of vehicle code, safety testing, etc. and people still act as though traffic deaths have caused no changes whatsoever to how our society looks at and...

During the day I-35 is like a public torture device. At night it’s not so bad. The downtown section is the most fun where it splits into upper and lower sections.

I wish I had driven through at 3am or so when it’s really empty.

Things you learn from crash compilation videos:

Things you learn from crash compilation videos:

Always watch out for the pickup truck.

Every time it’s not apparent what is going to happen, just look for the pickup in the frame, and 900% of the time, that’s the vehicle which will be crashing. It’s not even always the truck driver’s fault - but somehow, as if by a curse, the crash will involve the truck.

It gets way harder to guess who will crash when no trucks are present.
But in that...

Oppo, recommend me a (two door) wagon!

I certainly shouldn’t buy one, but I need one. Give me some ideas, I’m open to anything that meets the criteria of having two doors (not counting hatch) and wagon-ness.

And I might draw it if I like it.

Hmmmm. The price is kind of steep, but it is the GVL. The Luxury Yugo. The one with walnut grain veneers stuck on the plastic dash.
