Some Photos from Today

Some Photos from Today

Today Ravna and I drove (well, I drove, Ravna rode) from Portland to the small town of Cranbrook, British Columbia. It was the longest driving day so far for both Ravna and my Volvo: 9 hours and 540 miles. They both did a great job!

Here’s some random shots I took throughout the day, in chronological order:

Had to reach way back in the vault for this one (I’m pretty sure I didn’t post this one already).

DotS: A Robit!

DotS: A Robit!

While on the evening walk today, I came across this robitified Lincoln Mk Z! I’d never even heard of this autonomous driving company (“Designated Driver”).

They seem to be taking Tesla’s approach of cameras instead of lidar. Three front-facing cams, one rear, and two pucks with “NovAtel” logos (a company that makes high-precision GPS receivers).

The *Real* Story of My Day with Wrong Wheel Drive (41%)

The *Real* Story of My Day with Wrong Wheel Drive (41%)

I took a business trip down to Irvine again this week, so in order to make up for being in Irvine most of the time I took Friday off so I could go carve some canyons with Wrong Wheel Drive (41%). Here’s how it went!

I surprised even myself by rousing myself at 5:00 AM with little difficulty, and I was out on the road by 6:00. There were more cars out here than I expected, but that’s what they...

Project RAUX Box: Stage One Complete!

Project RAUX Box: Stage One Complete!

The first stage of Project RAUX Box was simply to get my development toolchain set up, because I haven’t done any serious embedded programming for five or so years. As you can see from the GIF, I’ve done it! You can tell because the blink pattern is not the typical one second on, one second off.

Your browser does not support HTML5 video tag.Click here to view original GIFYes, blinking an LED...

The Other Shoe Fell

The Other Shoe Fell

So when I said I drove my new super NP craigslist truck home without “major” mishap, that “major” qualifier was crucial because I omitted the MIL coming on about 15 minutes into the drive.

I thought I needed an OBD-I to OBD-II cable to check this out, but I learned from the Haynes manual that you only need to jam a wire between the two top rightmost ports of the OBD-I socket and the MIL will...

This is one of the only pics I’ve taken of Ravna where she’s not napping. If she’s not napping, she’s in nearly constant motion.

First Frost (for Me) on the New (to Me) Volvo

Had a great time meeting nine other Oppos & friends tonight. Looking forward to the May cruise even more now! Sleep well, everyone.

Model S For S-thetics

Model S For S-thetics

I’m coming back home from picking up a few things at the vet, and I notice a Tesla pass me, then see the “Model S” on the rear bumper. “Huh,” I think to myself, “I wonder if those fitment issues are as bad as the internet says.”

I pull up alongside it at the stop light, look over to the right, and see:

a window trim alignment issue easily noticeable from across my car and the gap between us.

Update: the guy in front of me decided to pass on it! Woohoo!

I’ve got a PPI scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at Ravenna Volvo (thanks, RPM!). Let’s hope it doesn’t bring bad news, or at least, not more than a couple grand of bad news.

Original Post: The guy in front of me to buy this manual 2005 V50 T5 AWD (w/ 178k miles) is waffling and might not buy it because he can’t drive manual and is...

New Shoes for the Cruise

New Shoes for the Cruise

Michelin Pilot Sports, on the recommendation of CR & some oppos (particularly AMG Tech). I’ve only driven them a few miles but they are noticeably quieter than the Goodyears that were on before. The Cruise should give me a little opportunity to see how they do in something other than boring conditions.

The Aftermath

The Aftermath

These are all the sockets that ended up stuck to lug nuts in the course of rotating my tires. I deeply appreciate their service, both in removing the wheels and giving me a decent excuse to pick up a torch soon.

Fortunately, rotating the passenger side went much faster, since I had enough sockets & lug nuts and knew all the tricks. I finished that up this morning, and also put in the new fog...

What Is This DotS?

What Is This DotS?

It looks like an Isuzu of some kind, but I’m just guessing because Isuzus tend to have great greenhouses and I love the greenhouse on this one.

Success!

Success!

After 5 hours, I have vanquished the swollen, seized, rusty lug nuts and the rusted-on wheels, and rotated half of my tires! I am nothing if not persistent.

The wet spot underneath the tire is from all the WD-40 rust-penetratent I had to spray into the bolt-holes to get the damn back wheel off. Other than that, the primary sign that I did anything at all is that some of the lug nuts on this...

Wrenching Help Needed

Wrenching Help Needed

Update: it’s been over three hours since I started trying to rotate my wheels, but I finally have two slightly-larger sockets, and plenty of new lug nuts. Time for round two!

It’s finally the weekend, so after I finished housework I went out to rotate the Volvo’s tires. Unfortunately the lug nuts are in such bad shape that I’m stuck now, so I need some advice. Help!

My main problem is that one...
