Here's My Idiotic Plan To Drive A Broken 260,000-Mile 'Holy Grail Of Jeep Grand Cherokees' Across The Country

I want to be upfront about this: My plan to fly to Colorado with two suitcases full of car parts and tools, repair my $700 “Holy Grail” Jeep Grand Cherokee’s significant mechanical problems and then drive the 260,000 mile SUV 1,500 miles back to Michigan all in a span of four days is deeply flawed. Chances of failure are high, and yet, on Saturday, I’m going for it.

When I wire-transferred...

Here's A Quick Look At The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71's Off-Road Hardware
Truck Yeah The trucks are good!Prev NextView All

Say what you want about the new 2021 Chevy Tahoe Z71 , but I think it looks good. Chevy was going for “ruggedness” (that’s literally the word in the press release), and I think they nailed it—well, at least from styling standpoint. As for actual hardware? Well, I crawled underneath the vehicle to find out; here’s what I saw.

The outgoing “K2...

A truck loaded with ten mid-engine Corvettes sits at a stoplight just outside of General Motors’ Mil

A truck loaded with ten mid-engine Corvettes sits at a stoplight just outside of General Motors’ Milford Proving Ground in southeast Michigan. I wonder what will become of these machines. Will they get hooned around a test track by engineers? Will they be run through a rigorous dyno test regimen? Or will they somehow escape the torture usually associated with proving grounds, and live more...

Truck Yeah The trucks are good!Prev Next View All

The world has just become a better place, because not only are two of the most popular full-size SUVs—the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2021 Chevrolet Suburban —getting diesel engines, but they’re getting inline six diesel engines. And we all know that that’s the best kind of diesel engine, especially when it can make 460 lb-ft of torque.

The same...

Somebody Nabbed This 13,000-Mile 1990 Toyota 4Runner 'Barn Find' For $4,000

After reading about my $700 “Holy Grail” Jeep purchase , a reader shared with me the incredible deal he scored on a perfect second-generation Toyota 4Runner with under 13,000 miles on its odometer. Just look at this minty off-roader.

“I am now the second owner of a 1990 4runner 4x4 in red with 12,700 miles (thats right, twelve thousand seven hundred) original miles on it!,” Roman Maser, a car...

Here's What The Tesla Cybertruck Looks Like On Public Roads Next To 'Normal' Cars

We’ve all seen the peculiarly-designed Tesla Cybertruck on stage and driving on a short course during its debut last month. But if you’ve been wondering what the vehicle looks like on public roads, especially next to standard, run-of-the-mill cars, the answer is: absolutely absurd. Take a look.

When Elon Musk first showed off the Tesla Cybertruck shortly after the LA Auto Show , the world went...

Don't Wind Up Like This Person: Check Your Car's Critical Steering And Suspension Parts

Don't Wind Up Like This Person: Check Your Car's Critical Steering And Suspension Parts

A few weeks ago, while driving to pick up a battery for my recently-drowned 1948 Jeep , I noticed a black second-generation Ford Escape curiously sitting in the road, straddling two lanes. One of the wheels was cocked hard to the right with lots of camber, and it didn’t take me long to realize what had likely happened: ball joint failure. This kind of scene has become all too common where I...

This Jeep's 'Death Wobble' Is So Terrifying It Will Haunt Your Dreams
Truck Yeah The trucks are good!Prev Next View All

As the owner of numerous solid front axle-equipped automobiles , I’ve dealt with the violent shake that is “Death Wobble” a number of times. And yet even I would soil my favorite set of cargo shorts were I piloting this white Jeep Grand Cherokee. Because it appears that there’s a massive earthquake affecting only its front axle and not the...

If The New Craigslist App Had Come Any Sooner My Life Would Be In Shambles

If The New Craigslist App Had Come Any Sooner My Life Would Be In Shambles

For the last 10 years or so, I’ve spent most of my life browsing two websites: Jalopnik and Craigslist . Read about cars, buy cars, wrench on cars—that’s my life’s motto, and it’s been serving me damn well (mostly ). Right now, I own 11-ish automobiles, which, you could argue, is too many, but I’d own far, far more had the recently-released Craigslist app come a few years sooner. I thank the...

This Ram 3500 In A Whataburger Parking Lot Is The Most 'Texas' Truck I've Ever Seen

This Ram 3500 In A Whataburger Parking Lot Is The Most 'Texas' Truck I've Ever Seen

This past weekend, I drove from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where I spotted the most “Texas” truck I’ve ever laid eyes upon. Sitting in the parking lot of the most Texas fast-food joint I know of, Whataburger, was a red Ram 3500 diesel armored with what I assume are standard automobile accessories sold at every AutoZone in The Lone Star State. Except this truck may have...

I Just Bought The Holy Grail Of Jeep Grand Cherokees But It Has 260,000 Miles And Is Broken In The Middle Of Nowhere

Back in October, I wrote about the “Holy Grail of Jeep Grand Cherokees ,” an extremely rare, first-generation manual transmission Grand Cherokee left to rot on a Wisconsin dairy farm. After reading that story, a reader miraculously discovered a second grail for sale for $800 in the Middle of Nowhere, Colorado. Unfortunately, it was 1,500 miles away and plagued by a bad clutch, a worn-out...

The Perfect Jeep Cherokee XJ Has Sold For $16,250

By now, it’s well established that I love old Jeeps . And while my love spans a variety of models, engines, and architecture types, there’s one Jeep that will always be my favorite: The Jeep Cherokee XJ , the true jack-of-all-trades Jeep. And of all XJs built between the 1984 and 2001 model years, there’s a very specific type that I consider “the holy grail.” And a pristine example just went...

I'm Trying To Save My World War II Jeep Engine After Filling It With A Huge Ice Block

I'm Trying To Save My World War II Jeep Engine After Filling It With A Huge Ice Block

Earlier this month, I drove my 1948 Willys CJ-2A through a deep mud pit , filling the engine with water. Worried sick that the motor might be doomed, I did what any logical person would: I ignored it and let the water freeze into a hug ice-block. Surely the Willys’ Go Devil engine, despite its World War II heritage, couldn’t survive this, I thought.

Things have gotten weird in the past few...

I Sold My $500 Postal Jeep But I'm Still Driving It And That's Just Unhealthy

The best thing to do when you sell a vehicle is to never see it again. I know, because I just sold my $500 Postal Jeep and yet I’m still seeing it daily and even cruising in it. And it’s driving me crazy.

I somehow managed to get 2,000 actual U.S. dollars in exchange for my $500 Postal Jeep, lovingly called Project POStal—a vehicle that started off life with a two-foot hole in its frame , a

A Look At The Engineering Behind The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is a huge deal. It’s the first high-volume Ford built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform, marking what could be a major inflection point for the company as the world shifts away from gas cars and towards EVs. I had a chance to talk with some engineers about the Mach-E’s tech; Here’s what I learned.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E started out life as a compliance...

Watch Our First Ride-Along In The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Yesterday at the launch for the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford gave journalists short rides in prototype models. Here’s what that was like.

Here's How The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E's Unusual Doors Work

One of the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E ’s most interesting design features is its lack of traditional door handles. There are actually no handles at all in the rear, and only tiny door “pulls” up front. You may be wondering, then, how do you open the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E’s doors?

I attended the Ford Mustang Mach-E debut yesterday in the Los Angeles area, and one of the features that caught my...
