R. Kelly Can’t Leave Illinois, but Wants to Travel to Dubai to Perform in Order to Pay Child Support

Robert “R.” Kelly doesn’t see nothin’ wrong with a little Dubai trip, but a Cook County judge might.

As R. Kelly awaits trial, where he faces 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse, the 52-year-old is seeking the Cook County judge’s permission to travel to Dubai so he can perform a few concerts in order to pay off his child support fees. Kelly is accused of sexually abusing three girls and one...

After Surviving R. Kelly, What Now? How About Trusting Survivors and Dismantling Systemic Misogynoir?

Three nights of television recently rocked the black community—surprising, since they detailed approximately three decades of well-known allegations of predation, exploitation and abuse by R&B artist R. Kelly. But if Lifetime’s record-breaking documentary Surviving R. Kelly finally put a human face onto the collective trauma so many women involved with the entertainer claimed to be carrying...

11 Thoughts About Surviving R. Kelly Now That I’ve Had a Chance to Process It All

11 Thoughts About Surviving R. Kelly Now That I’ve Had a Chance to Process It All

Like what I can only presume was the vast majority of black America, I spent a significant portion of the past weekend either watching the dream hampton produced/directed Lifetime docuseries, Surviving R. Kelly or talking about it. The discussions dominated social media and actual face-to-face interactions with people. Nothing in recent memory did such a thorough job or had the space to lay...

Only 2 Hours Into Surviving R. Kelly, the Conclusion Is Simple: Black Girls Deserve Better

I’m tired. We’re tired.

On the evening of January 3, 2019, I bundled up my anxiety and turned to Lifetime to watch what I knew would be one of the most noteworthy moments of media history.

Executive produced by dream hampton, Tamara Simmons, Joel Karlsberg and Jesse Daniels, Surviving R. Kelly is a 6-hour, three consecutive night event on Lifetime chronicling the cycle of abuse surrounding one...

The much-anticipated night of Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly has come, and right on schedule, Robert Kelly is threatening legal action.

Michel’le’s Surviving Compton Doesn’t Forget About Dre

Michel'le Survived Compton, Dre, and Suge And Got A Chance To Tell Her Story

Michel'le Survived Compton, Dre, and Suge And Got A Chance To Tell Her Story

On Saturday evening, Lifetime aired Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge, and Michel’le, which as the title suggests, is the story of Michel’le, the first lady of Ruthless Records with the tiny speaking voice but huge singing voice who both dated and bore children by Dr. Dre and Suge Knight. That sentence alone makes her story worth hearing because how the fuck? But this movie exists for other...

A source tells the Daily Star, “Beyoncé is arguably the world’s biggest star and has a story Lifetime thinks is too compelling to ignore.”
