SATs Invite Controversy With New 'Adversity Score'

SATs Invite Controversy With New 'Adversity Score'

After a week full of terrible ass ideas comes the news that the College Board—the organization responsible for administering SATs—will bestow students with an “Adversity Score” based upon their socioeconomic status.

And if this sounds like another terrible ass idea, it’s because it is.

Per CNN:

The score takes into account information from the student’s background, but it does not include...

Quiz: How Hotep Were You In College?

Quiz: How Hotep Were You In College?

Although the people who’ve come to be known as hoteps get a bad rap today, I have a measure of sympathy for them because I went through a moderate hotep phase in college — something I know many 35-to-45 year old black people can definitely relate to. Basically, being a hotep is like smoking weed. Most have tried it at least once, but some never quite learn how to inhale.

Anyway, there were...

On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris unveiled her intention to deliver the largest federal investment in teacher pay in the history of the United States.

All the Ways I Did Not Die

All the Ways I Did Not Die
America. In Black.America. In Black. is a weekly essay series that examines the myriad experiences of blackness in the United States.

When sitting in the passenger seat of a car with a known drug-dealer during a high-speed chase, one should always wear a seat belt. Always.

Thankfully, I came to the realization of this maxim seconds before the tire burst as I was sitting in the passenger seat...

The Education Department Is Canceling $150 Million Of Student Loan Debt and Betsy DeVos Can Stay Mad

The Education Department Is Canceling $150 Million Of Student Loan Debt and Betsy DeVos Can Stay Mad

I didn’t come here to praise Betsy DeVos.

So, I won’t.

Nearly 15,000 emails to former students and parents of students who attended college campuses overseen by now-defunct Corinthian Colleges and other for-profit institutions like ITT Tech were sent.

Thanks to an Obama-era provision called the Automatic Closed School Discharge, everyone who received one has some money coming their way.

The...

Alfred Street Baptist Church Donates $100,000 to Howard University Students

Students at Howard University currently have reason to run around the sanctuary praising God, because Alfred Street Baptist Church has raised $100,000 to pay off their student debt.

Thanks to the Virginia-based church, 34 students—including one Mya Thompson—can lay the burden of student debt down by the riverside.

According to the Washington Post, Thompson, like far too many, owed a...

Apparently Dashikis Are Popular In (Local) DC Now

When I got to Morehouse College in 1997, there were two groups of people on the yard whose geograhic residence was pretty easy to point out: Atlanta and Washington, DC. Atlanta was easy for me for obvious reasons, to the point where it was even fairly easy to distinguish between an East side dude and a West side dude. But DC, those cats were on a whole other plane. DC had some of the most...

Try Again: Lori Loughlin and Husband Face Harsher Charges After Rejecting Plea Deal

Lori Loughlin thought that her being a wealthy white woman legal defense would save her. Yeah…she thought. But reality comes at you fast.

Last week , the Full House actress was seen outside the courtroom like business as usual, signing autographs for all the Aunt Becky fans that came to see her. Loughlin, one of the more high-profile defendants in the FBI Operation Varsity Blues scandal ,...

University Dean Resigns Over Chick-fil-A Campus Ban

Cynthia Newman, dean of the College of Business Administration at Rider University in New Jersey, has decided to leave her post over the stupidest of allegedly delicious reasons.

Citing her values as a “very committed Christian,” Newman is resigning as dean because of the school’s refusal to allow Chick-fil-A on campus.

“As some of you already know, I am a committed follower of Jesus Christ,”...

Leave Malia Obama the Hell Alone and Let Her Enjoy Life (and Facebook)

Leave Malia Obama the Hell Alone and Let Her Enjoy Life (and Facebook)

Malia Obama continues to be photographed minding her black-ass business—this time, the 20-year-old college student was seen drinking out of a bottle of rosé during a weekend spent in Miami with friends.

Shudder at the thought of a bottle of rosé being in Miami, which is obviously the epicenter for wholesome good times and mild-mannered frivolity. In college at this age, I was drinking...

If You Have Student Loans, Grown-Ish and Scholly Are Trying to Make It Rain on Your Loan Provider (for You)

If You Have Student Loans, Grown-Ish and Scholly Are Trying to Make It Rain on Your Loan Provider (for You)

If you’re like me, and presumably millions of other folks across Los Estados Unidos, student loan debt is a monkey on your back. I personally know people whose student loan burden ranges from $4,000 to as high as $200,000. Whether you’re on the low end or the probably-need-to-stay-high-to-manage-it high end, no sentence is more exciting than, “We’ll pay off your student loans!”

And that’s just...

How The World's Worst Dating Advice Actually Worked For Me

How The World's Worst Dating Advice Actually Worked For Me

Chances are, if you were a normal college student, you were a terrible person to date. Who really knows anything about being a quality partner at 18, 19, even 20, 21 years old? Most of us at that age were just trying to find ourselves (or find ourselves in someone else’s pants). Now that I’m safely in my 30s, I would never tell my daughter (or any high school girl) to go looking for a husband...

Confederate Statue 'Silent Sam' Could Return to UNC Chapel Hill but Protesters Have Other Plans

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is hell-bent on having a Confederate statue on campus. Unfortunately for them, 26-year-old graduate student Maya Little is equally as committed to stopping them.

As such, according to NPR, she was arrested, charged with inciting a riot and assaulting a police officer after spearheading a rally against this racist ass monument on Monday night.

Her...
