Dumb snow fun

Dumb snow fun

Tried to pull Project Colony Ship off its cement pad into the driveway without clearing the foot of old snow in the way first.

Got this far. The second the rear wheels left the dry spot that was under the car and hit snowbank, all forward momentum ceased. It’s completely beached and will have to stay here until more melting happens.

Goodnight Oppo.

Goodnight Oppo.

The classics covered in the first snow of the season. I had to drive the wagon home from a transmission shop during the storm.

The shop said it didn’t act up for them, and when they dropped the pan the trans looked like new. He suggested it might be the engine cutting out for a second making it feel like the trans is lurching, and suggested i change the coil.

The xB also got its winter wheels...

Bringing Project Colony Ship into the new century

Bringing Project Colony Ship into the new century

For full 80s luxury, My 1987 Mercury Colony Park has separate ashtrays & cigarette lighters for both rear seat passengers.

These are now completely useless, as I have never allowed smoking in any car I’ve owned. So I added USB adaptors to both lighters, and put a 3' charging cord in the ash tray, so both rear passengers can recharge their phones.

The lids still close.

I also installed this...

Project Colony Ship, getting little things done

Project Colony Ship, getting little things done

Finally had a day that was slightly above freezing and not wet, so I could do some work on Project Colony Park. I can’t work on the big project of fixing the rust until it is warm enough to paint, so I’m trying to fix lots of fiddly problems.

First was replacing the shocks. All four were shot and would just stay compressed and not open again. So now there are shiny new gas-charged shocks among...

Sir! A smaller vessel has rammed us!

Sir! A smaller vessel has rammed us!

Project Colony Ship was rear-ended this morning. The bumper is shoved in pretty far and is slightly bent.

I’m hoping it is just bumper bracket damage and not frame damage. Either way I did not need another thing to deal with at the moment.

Project Colony Ship, Getting Hitched

Project Colony Ship, Getting Hitched

Finally had a nice day, and got the hitch installed on Project Colony Ship.

The front bolt holes didn’t line up at all, so I had to cut a slot where the bolt hole was, then weld in a reinforcement across the end of the slot. My awesome partner actually did the welding on that. She also welded the bolts to metal plates to make the pieces to insert into the frame.

While she was at that I...

WANTED. Ford cassette radio and/or radio help

WANTED. Ford cassette radio and/or radio help

The radio in Project colony ship is barely functional. Anyone have a working 80s ford tape deck they are willing to part with?

Failing that, does anyone have a suggestion for a new radio that won’t look grossly out of place? CD preferred (I am a luddite), but aux/usb only is acceptable.

(For those wondering why i want a cassette radio, the plan is to buy cassettes at the flea market to have...

There was an old woman who swallowed a fly...

It started with wanting to replace a dry-rotted line to the charcoal canister I noticed while replacing a burned out bulb. Then i realized all the vacuum lines were dry rotted and cracked. Then i had to pull the upper plenum to reach to of the lines (thanks Ford!). While i had it off it made sense to replace the old heater hoses that also run under it. With the hose off i have room to replace...

Ford stereo wiring help

Ford stereo wiring help

In my continuing quest to find a working radio for Project Colony Ship, i picked up an 89 lincoln radio, but it turn out the speaker connector is different.

Turns out the lincoln had an amp (missing from the junkyard one i got the radio from). On wiring diagrams the outputs are labeled as speaker signals rather than just as speaker wires. If i wire it directly to the existing speaker wiring...

Patching the hull

Patching the hull

I am working on rust repair on Project Colony Ship, however it is being slowed by my house painting project and a lot of rain.

I did make a version 2 left quarter patch panel and got that, the main inner panel, and one end cap piece welded in last night. The inner welding isn’t pretty as the angles all suck, but it is solid. All total i set myself on fire once and the car twice (solvent from...

Gotta say

Gotta say

This photo sums me up more than I may be comfortable with.

Kilt, knee socks, combat boots, buzz cut with pony tail, insufficiently shaved, battered old car with primer spots because I am mid-repairs, trailer with custom welded kayak rack, and a stranger’s canoe on the roof because they needed a lift.

Project Colony Ship is back on the road.

Project Colony Ship is back on the road.

After 4 evenings and some final buttoning up today, the trans from the donor wagon is in and works!

Stitill need to do a full filter and fluid, and swap to the longer 87 dipstick tube. But it feels good to drive it again for the first time in months.

Wheel opinion time

Wheel opinion time

These Torque Thrust wheels, on the Project Colony Ship wagon? They are 14x7 wheels, which is similar to the stock size for the wagon. Better shot of type of wheel with center cap on below too.

Not quite the sky falling, but too close.

Not quite the sky falling, but too close.

This has not been a great week. I was home today recovering from having a tooth extracted yesterday. Took the wagon to the junkyard as the Fit’s axle is broken.

While out a bolt fell off a truck in front of me and hit the wagon, smashing the brand new windshield and chipping the paint.

I was able to follow the truck until it stopped and talked to both the driver and the owner of the company....

Ford 5.0 Engine swap ponderings/questions

Ford 5.0 Engine swap ponderings/questions

Having just gotten it running again, I’m thinking of getting rid of the early 5.0 with its crude EFI in Project Colony Ship (my ‘87 Mercury Colony Park Wagon), and replacing it with something better (read: OBD2, and better parts availability).

My first thought was, of course, LS. But that had the potential for a lot of fabrication, and would make speedo, etc. a major hassle.

Recently I was...

It has begun...

It has begun...

Started on the rot repair on the wagon, decided to tackle the worst panel first.

1 / 5

I copied the more intact passenger quarter onto some paper, transferred that to some 3/4" plywood, cut two out, and used those to hammerform a new patch panel.

Then I hacked off the old “repair” and bondo, and trimmed it up to fit the new panel.

Here is a tip from the prior owner, when repairing rust, don’t...

Surprise! It's rot!

Surprise! It's rot!

The rear window on Project Colony Ship has not worked, and has been leaking past the gasket since I got the car. Recent attempts on my part to fix the wayback mechanism have been to no avail. But because I have been back there I noticed how wet the carpet in the wayback footwell had gotten, so I pulled it and the jute padding out (both of which were soaked).

Right Gas tank strap mount as...

Wagon is home.

Wagon is home.

After a 3 hour task was turned into 5 thanks to being lied to by uhaul, the wagon is safely home. More on both the trip and the wagon tomorrow.

Thanksgiving drive

Thanksgiving drive

Project Colony Ship handled the haul up to Boston and back for thanksgiving at a friend’s place with no issues. Even the 15 degree weather on the drive home didn’t phase it.

I need to replace the moisture barrier in the driver’s door though, as i had a lot of cold air coming through the door panel.

The stripped carcass

The stripped carcass

The parts wagon has been stripped of everything I need off it. There are some wants left, but given someone is buying it for $500 (I paid $600), I’m not going to be greedy.
