Not so much, no

Not so much, no

Parked next to a Jeep tonight with massive tires. I mean, bloody hell, these are huge.

Mine? 31.5”, give or take (265/75R16). Theirs? 40”. Yuuuuuge!

I have some vague hope that if I have a flat tire I can change it myself despite my bad back. As much as I’d love to have beefy tires like that, I’d never be able to manhandle them.

It does look good, undeniably. Except for that color-matched...

Jeep Grilles: the early years

Jeep Grilles: the early years

I’ve written about the experience of owning and driving Jeeps along with a lengthy series on the mostly-forgotten history of Jeep trucks. In fact, pretty much everything automotive I’ve published here is about Jeeps, so why change things now?

I expected this to be a single post, but I realized there’s just too much history and too few hours in my day today, so you get to wait several weeks for...

Just how feeble is the 4-banger?

Just how feeble is the 4-banger?

This is awfully appealing: reasonable enough price I can get a loan, manual, clean, rust-free(ish), new top. And about 20 minutes from me, which is always appealing.

But I prefer the straight 6, not only for its reputation but also because I’m pretty clueless, and sticking with the devil I know helps compensate for my ignorance.

And I’ve never heard much good, power-wise, about the 2.5L engine.

CJ kinda day

CJ kinda day

Stopped and talked to the owner of this CJ 7 Renegade for sale. $4k, considering making an offer if I can get a small loan, although it needs a fair bit of work.

And I know nothing about this CJ-5 I spotted other than dayum is it clean and purty.

I also passed a lifted, clean-looking FJ-40, running with no top in now-40º weather. No pic, sadly.

And all I ask...

And all I ask...

...is a tall Jeep and a forest road to steer her by.

I missed peak foliage , but it’s still beautiful out here in southern Indiana.

This morning when it was still 30º I saw a fellow Jeeper driving with no top or doors. That’s dedication.

I was also passed by two minivans on state highway 46. ItalianJobR53 would have been mortified.

Other highlights of the weekend: a wonderful hot apple cider,...

Today's thing rarely seen

Today's thing rarely seen

A Jeep something or other with a 3.7 litre petrol engine. Can’t recall ever seeing one before and I wouldn’t like to have to sell it secondhand.

Le sigh

Le sigh

Found this outside my office building. Thankfully it’s at a meter so I have a rough idea of when I might be able to catch its owner.

But for 30 seconds, there go I

But for 30 seconds, there go I

I could have bid more, but I couldn’t bring myself to gamble on something that old that I couldn’t visit before committing and I’d have to drive 10 hours home. So it went for $1376, a hell of a bargain for my dream XJ (although I would have preferred 4 doors).

(Edit: worth noting this is all XJDano’s fault. He brought it to my attention. YOUR FAULT.)

And so it ends

And so it ends

This is, in all likelihood, the last hour of 90° weather Indiana will see for 8 months. Decided to start my work day early so I could escape to Lake Monroe this evening.

It’s been a mostly pretty good summer. I just wish ‘tweren’t over.

(Adding a photo or two as the evening proceeds.)

Color, people

Color, people

I’ve ranted often enough about the need to step away from the grayscale world, but this CJ popped up and assaulted my sensibilities.

Even a CJ can’t make silver an interesting “color”. What should be a work of art is just...meh.

Friends don’t let friends drive boring vehicles.

And so it begins

And so it begins

Sure, I don’t have an odometer, or a tripometer, or a compass/temperature display in my rear-view mirror, or a dimming rear-view mirror for that matter, or a clean-shifting transmission...

But Halloween must be observed.

(The real trick will be my hood ornament. Hurrah for steel vehicles.)

Never in a million years would I try this, but it’s impressive watching this MB take a nose dive and stay upright.

The Jeep that time forgot

The Jeep that time forgot

Update: found a very informative page. There were far more models than I knew.

http://www.offroaders.com/tech/jeep/Jeep-FJ.htm

The Jeep FJ Fleetvans are so out of character, and so rare, that I have only heard of them 3-4 times, and while I sometimes think I could name every Jeep ever manufactured off the top of my head, the FJ proves me wrong.

I completely missed them for my Jeep Truck series...

Imogene & Black Bear Pass Photo Dump

Imogene & Black Bear Pass Photo Dump

Last week, after getting back from a video job in The Amazon jungle I decided to go ahead and take my vacation for the year meaning most of my office co-workers didn’t see me for an entire month. I’ve made it a point to load up my Jeep and take it at least one out of state adventure each year, and this year I decided to make the pilgrimage to Telluride/Ouray, Colorado.

The drive from Dallas...

Burgled again

Burgled again

After 5 years of relative security, my Jeep was violated for the second time this year . This time in a wide open parking lot in bright daylight with plenty of cameras, so if I really want to I’m sure I can get a look at the crackhead (yes, I’m projecting, but it’s a not-unreasonable assumption).

Bunch of change (probably $10), the cupholder insert the coins were in, a pocket tool, and my gym...

Renegades and dealers: a puzzler

Renegades and dealers: a puzzler

I’ve mentioned a piece of this puzzle in FP comments, but I thought I’d bring it here and expand on it a bit.

Via Autotrader’s search tool, there are fewer than 40 remaining new manual Renegades on U.S. dealer lots. These are all 2018 models, since Jeep dropped the stick shift in 2019 (boo).

(Anyone know what percentage of dealerships are covered by Autotrader? Also worth pointing out that yes,...
