Sea Of Thieves Gets Monthly Updates And The First One Is Pretty...Explosive

Sea of Thieves, Rare’s chill pirate hangout game, has been on the upswing lately. After an expansive (and excellent ) Anniversary Update that brought story quests and cooking to its cartoony high seas in May, Sea of Thieves is upping the ante yet again with monthly updates. Log into the game now on Xbox One or PC and you’ll be greeted by the very first one, the Black Powder Stashes.

Sea Of Thieves’ New Story Quests Are Just What The Game Needed

Sea Of Thieves’ New Story Quests Are Just What The Game Needed

Sea of Thieves’ Anniversary Update is live. The pirate game’s ambitious expansion brings activities from competitive player-vs.-player battles to fishing and cooking. Largest of all are the “Tall Tales,” a lengthy chain of cutscene and exploration driven story missions that are designed to be completed in a group or by your lonesome. The first—hunting down the treasure-studded Shores of...

There’s a reason it’s called Sea of Thieves and not Sea of Thief.

It’s a silly swashbuckling game made for going on treasure hunts and bounty hunts and chicken hunts with friends. Its primary allure is as a pirate-themed sandbox in which you can swordfight with other pirate players and walk away from an afternoon of...

Sea of Thieves' Producer Outlines A Promising Year-Two Plan

Sea of Thieves' Producer Outlines A Promising Year-Two Plan

Sea of Thieves’ first year had as many ups and downs as a boat in a storm. A rough launch gave way to numerous updates and events that expanded the game world. The Anniversary Update, to be released April 30, will add a story mode and competitive PVP. I spoke with the Xbox One and PC game’s executive producer Joe Neate about what comes next for Sea of Thieves, the lessons learned from the...

Sea of Thieves, One Year Later

Sea of Thieves, One Year Later

Sea of Thieves is one year old today. The freeform pirate adventure game launched into choppy waters, with early server problems causing some anxiety on the high seas. Since then, the game has expanded with new ships and encounters, transforming the world and satisfying diehard buccaneers. Here’s what’s happened in Sea of Thieves over the past year.

Sea of Thieves launches on March 20th, 2018....

Apex Legends Might Have Killed Sea Of Thieves' Twitch Momentum

Apex Legends Might Have Killed Sea Of Thieves' Twitch Momentum

At the end of January, Sea of Thieves seemed to be on the cusp of pulling off one heck of a trick : joining Twitch’s upper echelon after nearly a year of relative irrelevance. Popular streamers were piling onto the newly-refurbished ship ’s deck, curious to see if it could provide a viable alternative to Fortnite, which everyone has been playing for approximately a million years in Twitch...

Sea Of Thieves Has Unexpectedly Become One Of Twitch's Biggest Games

Sea Of Thieves Has Unexpectedly Become One Of Twitch's Biggest Games

After an intriguing but worryingly barebones launch in March 2018, Rare’s ambitious pirate opus Sea of Thieves found itself lost at sea. There just wasn’t enough for players to do, causing many to fear that the game would never live up to its potential. Late last year, that began to change. Now, Sea of Thieves is improbably scaling Twitch’s mast, getting closer to the top every day.

For the...

Sea Of Thieves Update Will Cut Down On File Size

Sea of Thieves is a constantly evolving game with an expanding roster ofmonsters to battle and islands to explore. In a blog post yesterday, Rare announced that it’s nerfing a dangerous foe: file size.

Longtime Twitch Streamer Summit1g Tops Ninja's Subscriber Count

Jaryd “Summit1g” Lazar is no newcomer to Twitch. The mostly retired Counter-Strike pro has been one of the platform’s most recognizable faces since 2012, but over the past few weeks, he’s worked his way into Twitch’s highest echelon.

According to third-party analytics site Twitchstats, Summit now has more subscribers than any other streamer—including the platform’s ubiquitous (though

Sea Of Thieves’ Newest Update Makes The Game More Surprising And More Satisfying

Sea Of Thieves’ Newest Update Makes The Game More Surprising And More Satisfying

When Sea of Thieves launched back in March, it felt pretty barren. The open sea in the Xbox and PC pirate game was gorgeous, but there wasn’t much to do . Since then, updates have brought new threats and areas , encouraging pirates to team up to take on sharks, survive volcanoes and explore distant islands. The latest free update, Shrouded Spoils, adds even more dangerous foes, new weather...

Sea of Thieves' New Volcanic Region Is Difficult And Hilarious

Sea of Thieves' New Volcanic Region Is Difficult And Hilarious

Rare’s online pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves launched into some rough waters, feeling more like a beta than full game. Since then, the developers have worked to make the seas more treacherous and exciting. Last week’s Forsaken Shores content adds an entirely new region packed with dangerous volcanoes and difficult quests. It’s the perfect destination for pirates who think the game’s...

Sea of Thieves is full of jerk players and giant sharks , but the game has never felt all that dangerous. The latest update, Cursed Sails, mostly corrects that. The addition of terrifying skeleton threats, battles packed with cursed cannonballs, and a brand new player ship brings a welcome sense of urgency to a game...

Sea of Thieves' New Event Is All About Exploration

<i>Sea of Thieves</i>' New Event Is All About Exploration

Sea of Thieves is slowly expanding with new monsters and new events aiming to bring excitement and color to a game derided for repetitive content. A new event involving exploring and hunting down hidden thrones throughout the world shows one way the controversial pirate game could build a community.

Part of the fun in Sea of Thieves comes from embracing your inner pirate by randomly attacking...

New Shark Hunt Finally Gets Sea Of Thieves Players To Cooperate

New Shark Hunt Finally Gets <i>Sea Of Thieves</i> Players To Cooperate

Sea of Thieves only has a few things for players to do, and that lack of variety has been the Xbox One and PC game’s biggest weakness. A new event, The Hungering Deep, tries to break up the grinding with a quest that brings players together to hunt a massive shark. The quest itself is a little basic, but the final battle is a climactic showcase of everything Sea of Thieves does well—and it’s...

Here’s A Stat That Distorts The Value Of A Game

Here’s A Stat That Distorts The Value Of A Game

From Metacritic scores to How Long To Beat completion times, there are plenty of numbers that players reference when deciding to buy a game. Gaming storefront Green Man Gaming has another metric: Average Cost Per Hour. 2015’s Doom is said to cost $1.24 per hour. Frostpunk is $4.57 an hour. These are strange numbers that reveals the pitfall of breaking games down into pretty little...

Sea Of Thieves Finally Gets Private Crews

<i>Sea Of Thieves </i>Finally Gets Private Crews

Sea of Thieves is adding some welcome features that will keep crews together and help them on their plunder-filled quests. The pirate game now allows players to make their crews private and sail even the biggest ships with only a few hands on deck.

One of the most annoying things in Sea of Thieves was the inability to limit your crew to friends only. Sailing on a large galleon meant either...

I Met A Genuine Pirate Legend In Sea Of Thieves

I Met A Genuine Pirate Legend In <i>Sea Of Thieves</i>

This weekend, I sat down to play Sea of Thieves. As I sailed on my lonesome, passing time until my friends could log on, I returned to port and ran into another group of players. This type of encounter usually leads to disaster , but I was instead treated to a surprise: I had come face to face with a Pirate Legend.

When the other ship first came into port, I was surprised by how decorated it...
