Two Years Later, Sony’s '#JRPGVita' Campaign Is A Bust

Two Years Later, Sony’s '#JRPGVita' Campaign Is A Bust

On June 6, 2013, Sony director of strategic content Shahid Ahmad wrote on Twitter that the company was looking to bring more Japanese role-playing games to the Vita.

“Greetings,” he said. “We’re looking at JRPGs and similar for Vita. Your votes on which ones you’d buy using #jrpgvita please.”

The tweet exploded, drawing attention from JRPG fans on sites like NeoGAF and Reddit, and in the coming...

League Of Legends Team Booted From Challenger Series For Shady Activity

<i>League Of Legends</i> Team Booted From Challenger Series For Shady Activity

Not having enough players on a team might seem like a pretty fundamental problem for any sports team, be it electronic sports or...the analog kind. Not so for North American League of Legends Challenger Team Fusion.

The Challenger Series, for those who might not be familiar with the intricacies of League of Legends’ burgeoning professional eSports ecosystem, is sort of like the little leagues...

Ten Secret Locations in World of Warcraft

Ten Secret Locations in <i>World of Warcraft</i>

Some are easy to find, some are well hidden, but Azeroth and the surrounding worlds are big enough to have special places to which no quests direct you and that most players don't know. Nixxiom on Youtube collected 10 of them and their exact location on the map so that we can all find them.

Good to see the hidden farmlands near Khaz Modan and Arathi Highlands are on the list, I remember...

Hey, Atlus Just Announced A Really Rad-Looking RPG

Hey, Atlus Just Announced A Really Rad-Looking RPG

So, OK. On one hand, the boringly-titled Lost Dimension looks like a pretty typical turn-based strategy-role-playing game, with anime graphics and a bit of a Valkyria Chronicles flair to it.

On the other hand, well, there’s this, via publisher Atlus (who announced today that they’re publishing Lost Dimension in North America this summer for PS3 and Vita):

Tactical RPGs are awesome! You...

Destiny's Trials of Osiris Delayed Because Of Exploit

<i>Destiny</i>'s Trials of Osiris Delayed Because Of Exploit

Bungie is delaying the much-anticipated return of Destiny’s Trials of Osiris while they address a recently discovered exploit that can totally ruin competitive matches.

The announcement is part of the latest Destiny weekly update, which also includes a release date for the King’s Fall raid’s upcoming hard mode. Trials of Osiris no longer has a specific release date; King’s Fall hard mode is...

Destiny Players Somehow Two-Man The Final Raid Boss

<i>Destiny</i> Players Somehow Two-Man The Final Raid Boss

Over the weekend, two Destiny players beat Oryx, the final boss of the King’s Fall raid, without any backup. Yes, two.

The feat was pulled off by CommanderCuesta of The Legend Himself clan, along with his teammate A Death Card. If you’ve played the King’s Fall raid, I highly recommend watching. It is ridiculous. Check it out:

The Oryx fight is designed for a full team of six. Played...

There's A Pretty Great ‘Cheers’ Easter Egg In Fallout 4

There's A Pretty Great ‘Cheers’ Easter Egg In <i>Fallout 4</i>

The new post-apocalyptic video game Fallout 4 takes place in Boston. You know what else took place in Boston? The beloved 1980s sitcom Cheers.

Hi! This post reveals a cool thing I found in Fallout 4. If you want to find it on your own, maybe stop reading.

While wandering the Boston wastes last night, I came across a curious sight: A flight of stairs leading down to a door labeled “Prost Bar.”

I...

If there's a new Resident Evil, there will eventually be a mod to remove (or mitigate) the series' iconic door animations. The latest update to the original game has now joined the club, thanks to a modder named Sectus, allowing people to move from room-to-room a few seconds faster.

One of the most popular Resident...

The New Metal Gear Trailer Sounds Like Kojima Saying Goodbye

The New <i>Metal Gear</i> Trailer Sounds Like Kojima Saying Goodbye

If this is Hideo Kojima’s last Metal Gear trailer, he’s going out with a bang.

My personal history with the franchise is complicated; loved the first and third games, couldn’t get into the second and fourth games. The deeper Metal Gear dug into its mythology, the more it pushed me away. (It’s weird, too, since I’m usually into things with convoluted storylines!)

But I’m setting everything aside...

Bungie Removes Destiny's Most Popular Exploit

Bungie Removes <i>Destiny</i>'s Most Popular Exploit

Farewell, Omnigul farming. Thanks to a new hotfix, Destiny players will no longer be able to repeatedly kill Omnigul for blue loot . Moon wizards, rejoice.

Of course, this doesn’t solve the major problem that Rise of the Iron brought to the table. The problem, as anyone who’s played Destiny over the past week knows, is that leveling past 340 is a major grind. It’s a convoluted process with...

A Few Helpful Tweaks For The Division On PC

A Few Helpful Tweaks For <i>The Division</i> On PC

If you’re playing The Division on PC, there are a few tweaks you can make to get the game running more smoothly. Or, if you’re getting a black screen at startup, to get the game running at all.

Alt+Enter Your Way To Freedom

First of all, that black startup screen: If that’s happening to you, you should be able to easily get around it by hitting Alt+Enter. That’ll bump the game into windowed...

The Division's New Anti-Destiny Advertisement Is Incredibly Misleading

<i>The Division</i>'s New Anti-<i>Destiny</i> Advertisement Is Incredibly Misleading

A recent advertisement for Ubisoft’s upcoming The Division suggests that a gaming website declared it to be better than Destiny. Problem is, the website never actually said that.

The Division, which comes out next week, has drawn all sorts of comparisons to Bungie’s Destiny thanks to their shared genre; both games are online-only RPG-shooter hybrids that will undoubtedly vie for the same...

Thunderlord Is Back In Destiny, And It Owns

Thunderlord Is Back In Destiny, And It Owns

This week, Destiny 2 got a big machine gun that chews through aliens while summoning lightning from the sky. It’s easy to get, and it rules.

The gun in question is called “Thunderlord,” and is the latest in a long line of exotic gear from the first Destiny to make its way over to Destiny 2. Thunderlord is noteworthy not just because it shreds enemies like Thor at the end of Infinity War, but...

Ask Dr. NerdLove: Why Can't I Take Control Over My Life?

Hello all you bags of Internet horror meat, and welcome to Ask Dr. NerdLove, the only outlaw dating advice column north of the Rio Bravo.

This week, we’re talking about power and influence. There are times we all feel like we’re just pawns in the game of life. But how can we use what little influence we might have to change our lives for the better and force a different outcome? Is there a way...

Red Dead Redemption 2 Defiantly Bucks Open-World Trends

Red Dead Redemption 2 Defiantly Bucks Open-World Trends

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Red Dead Redemption 2 are both big open-world games, and they both came out in October of 2018. Both involve a hero on a horse riding around and murdering lots of people. The similarities end there.

AC Odyssey is very much of its time. It’s an embodiment of the open-world game design ethos popularized over the last decade by its developer, Ubisoft, and it’s loaded...

Red Dead Redemption 2: The Kotaku Review

Red Dead Redemption 2: The Kotaku Review

From tip to tail, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a profound, glorious downer. It is the rare blockbuster video game that seeks to move players not through empowering gameplay and jubilant heroics, but by relentlessly forcing them to confront decay and despair. It has no heroes, only flawed men and women fighting viciously to survive in a world that seems destined to destroy them.

It is both an...

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Smartly Refines The Origins Skill Tree

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Smartly Refines The Origins Skill Tree

Of the many differences between last year’s Assassin’s Creed Origins and this year’s Odyssey, the changes to upgradable abilities have the most dramatic effect on gameplay. Origins’ skill trees were a convoluted mess even at the time, and Odyssey’s refinements bring that messiness into sharper relief.

The majority of Assassin’s Creed games haven’t included action RPG-style skill trees at all;...

How To Play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Like An Actual Assassin

How To Play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Like An Actual Assassin

One could be forgiven for thinking Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was an action-packed mix of 300 and Wonder Woman, all swinging battle axes and dudes getting kicked off cliffs. But the word “Assassin” is right there in the title, and it is more than possible to play as a stealthy killer. In fact, it’s really fun.

I’m about 30 hours in to Odyssey, and have been having a fantastic time. Like, a “holy...

Four Weapons You Should Really Have In Destiny 2: Forsaken

Four Weapons You Should Really Have In Destiny 2: Forsaken

Destiny 2: Forsaken has been out for almost a month. That’s been long enough to get a sense of which weapons are good, which are bad, and which you should go out of your way to track down.

A year ago, I joked that the MIDA Multi-Tool was the only good gun in Destiny 2. That’s happily not the case anymore, and if you play enough you’ll actually get a variety of good guns with a variety of...
