Surplus Jet Engines And Other Stories From The Deadly American Battle For The Land Speed Record

Surplus Jet Engines And Other Stories From The Deadly American Battle For The Land Speed Record

The desire to go fast is universal. The desire to go faster than anyone else has gone before, to buy your own jet engine and tempt fate at 400, 500, 600 mph, is a drive few possess and fewer still survive. This is what’s detailed in Speed Duel by Samuel Hawley, covering a near decade-long battle for the land speed record.

(Welcome back to the Jalopnik Race Car Book Club , where we all get...

Why Bugatti Thinks It Could've Gone Faster Than That 304-MPH Speed Run, But Chose Not To

Why Bugatti Thinks It Could've Gone Faster Than That 304-MPH Speed Run, But Chose Not To

Just recently, Bugatti took a pre-production, monstrously powerful Chiron out to break the 300-mph barrier that, until now, was said to be elusive only by virtue of the limits of modern tire technology . But while Bugatti hit nearly 305 mph , the company wants everyone to know it could’ve gone faster.

Bugatti announced its speed run, in which it claimed to hit nearly 304.8 mph at the massive...

Volkswagen's 600 Horsepower Jetta Set A Very Specific Land Speed Record

Volkswagen's 600 Horsepower Jetta Set A Very Specific Land Speed Record

The whole reason Volkswagen flew me out to the Bonneville Salt Flats was so I could, ideally, witness their specially-prepped 2019 Jetta beat the speed record for the Southern California Timing Association’s (SCTA) Blown Gas Coupe (G/BGC) class record of 208.472 mph. They did, making an impressive 210.16 mph—but they did it after I left, so I didn’t get to see it. Oh well.

Here's The Crazy...

A New Wheel-Driven Speed Record Has Been Set At The Bonneville Salt Flats

A New Wheel-Driven Speed Record Has Been Set At The Bonneville Salt Flats

I was out at the Bonneville Salt Flats this past week to drive some old and slow cars fast-ish on the salt, but while I was there puttering around, something much more important happened: Team Vesco’s Turbinator II set a new world record for a wheel-driven car, an insane 483 mph.

I actually saw the run happen, way out on the horizon, and it sounded like a jet plane taking off. The Turbinator...

Infamous Bluebird Jet-Engined Speedboat Is Back After Spending 34 Years as an Underwater Wreck

Infamous Bluebird Jet-Engined Speedboat Is Back After Spending 34 Years as an Underwater Wreck

One of the fastest and most remarkable watercraft ever built, the Bluebird K7, returned to the water for the first time this past weekend after an absence of 51 years, 34 of which were spent at the bottom of a British lake. The Bluebird K7 is best known as the vessel that Donald Campbell used to set water speed records in the 1950s and 1960s, before he was killed in a crash in an attempt to...

Here's Where John Hennessey Stands On That 300 MPH Claim Now

Here's Where John Hennessey Stands On That 300 MPH Claim Now

A few weeks back, we wrote about how John Hennessey said he’ll be able to break the 300 mph with his planned Venom F5 supercar . We found that it’s extremely unlikely that the F5 could make 300 mph on the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires the car currently uses. John Hennessey himself reached out to us to discuss this, and here’s where he stands on the speed claim now.

Four Reasons To Be...

Four Reasons To Be Skeptical That Hennessey's Venom F5 Will Break The 300 MPH Barrier

Four Reasons To Be Skeptical That Hennessey's Venom F5 Will Break The 300 MPH Barrier

For a while now, the next big goal in the never-ending quest for speed has been to hit 300 mph in a road car. The race to break that barrier has been heating up lately, with Koenigsegg’s average 278 mph record-setting run in Nevada demonstrating just how close we are. Bugatti might have something to say about it too. But Texas car tuner John Hennessey is predicting that his latest supercar,...

Watch A Street-Legal, Modified Ford GT Go 292 MPH

Johnny Bohmer has been breaking records in his 2,700 horsepower BADD GT for a while now , first taking it to 250 mph before going up to 275 mph and, then, 283.232 mph, which still stands as the Guinness World Record. On Friday, Bohmer beat that, going 292 mph at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, though coming back down to zero turned out to be the hardest part.

Bohmer’s original plan was...

A Koenigsegg Agera RS Just Broke The Record For Going From Zero To 249 MPH And Back To Zero

A Koenigsegg Agera RS Just Broke The Record For Going From Zero To 249 MPH And Back To Zero

Just last month, a Bugatti Chiron went from zero to 249 mph and back to zero in an incredible 41.96 seconds. On Sunday, a Koenigsegg Agera RS broke that record, performing the same feat in 36.44 seconds.

The Koenigsegg broke the record at an airfield in Vandel, Denmark. Here’s the video they published Thursday, documenting the act, replete with hype music and what at first seems like a teaser...

Alfa Romeo's Nürburgring SUV Record Lap Video Seems To Be Edited

Alfa Romeo's Nürburgring SUV Record Lap Video Seems To Be Edited

Just a couple of days ago, Alfa Romeo released a video showing their new Stelvio Quadrifoglio breaking the Nürburgring SUV lap record with an impressive time of 7:51.7. That’s great, right? Well, it’d be a bit more great if the video of the lap didn’t seem to have two major cuts, added and removed time, and in the video the car seems to teleport around parts of the ring in ways that defy...

Why Koenigsegg Couldn't Set The Record They Deserved To Set

Why Koenigsegg Couldn't Set The Record They Deserved To Set

Koenigsegg went to Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps to set a new lap record for production cars with the One:1 last week. They managed to do that, ending practice Wednesday with a time of 2:32.14. It’s not the record they wanted to set or the one they deserve to set. I was there. The world, it seems, is against Koenigsegg.

The record above is the one they, and other outlets, will be touting. But...

This Lamborghini Accelerates To 238.6 MPH In Half A Mile

This Lamborghini Accelerates To 238.6 MPH In Half A Mile

We all know Underground Racing’s twin-turbo supercars can somehow be ridiculously fast without blowing up, but this Lamborghini Huracan reached a new level by setting the 1/2 mile speed record at 238.6mph.

A stock Huracan packs just under 610 horsepower. But add Underground’s “X Version” twin-turbo upgrade, plus a sequential gearbox and race clutch to handle what’s coming, and you...

This Electric Formula Car Set A New 0-62MPH Record At 1.779 Seconds

Students of the University of Stuttgart had enough of the fact that the electric acceleration record ended up on the shelf of students from ETH Zürich and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, so they built their own racer that was good enough to beat them by a mere 0.006 seconds.

And it does burnouts. That’s almost ludicrous!

Stuttgart’s all-wheel drive electric Formula car weighs...

Watch A 4-Time Rally World Champion Set A Speed Record With A Tractor

Above, you'll seen an old man drifting a tractor in the forest, and pretty much everything you need to know about Finland. Below is the story of how this same old man – four-time world rally champion Juha Kankkunen – set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest speed ever recorded for tractors.

In order to drive as fast as possible on snow in a straight line, you don’t...

This Is What 200 MPH Looks Like In An Acura Integra

Right in the middle of all the GT-Rs, Porsches and Lamborghinis that showed up to the Heuberger Subaru Pikes Peak Air Strip Attack at Colorado Springs Airport earlier this month was a seemingly humble 1994 Acura Integra driven by one Myles Kerr. But this is no ordinary Integra.

It’s gone from being a 12-second car that churned out just 287 horsepower to a half-mile speed monster that goes...

The Koenigsegg One:1 Can Do 0 To 186 MPH And Back To 0 In 17.95 Seconds

The Koenigsegg One:1 Can Do 0 To 186 MPH And Back To 0 In 17.95 Seconds

Koenigsegg’s latest 0-186mph-0 record of 17.95 seconds is astonishing, especially considering that a McLaren P1 needs 16.5 seconds just to reach 186mph, and 4.5 seconds to brake to zero from just 124mph. Holy Batmobile,Christian!

Long before Batman started driving ridiculous tanks that can be driven through walls, Batmobiles were depicted as rocket-powered speed recorders that were armored but...

Watch Mercedes Recreate A Long Lost One-Off Race Car From 1938

Watch Mercedes Recreate A Long Lost One-Off Race Car From 1938

It took Mercedes-Benz Classic three years to rebuild the 1938 540 K Streamliner they found in a warehouse back in 2001. Thankfully, they documented the process, and the result is this 45-minute flick that shows how the Streamliner went from a jumble of parts to 115 MPH.

It’s great to see Mercedes still being able to talk about the construction of the Autobahn and chasing speed records...

This Japanese Mag Lev Train Just Went A World Record 374 MPH

Central Japan Railway’s magnetic levitation bullet train, otherwise known as Chūō Shinkansen has done it again. The new speed record stands at a whopping 374 mph (603 km/h).

After last Thursday’s 366mph run, the Maglev train managed to add another eight mph to its top speed for 10.7 seconds, during which time it covered 1.11 miles. Even with a rolling start, your Hennessey Venom has nothing...

The Old Ford GT Is Actually The Fastest Car In The World

The Old Ford GT Is Actually The Fastest Car In The World

This weekend’s Texas Mile event saw a heavily modified Ford GT from M2K Motorsports hit 293.6 mph, the latest in a round of standing mile and other events where a Ford GT comes to dominate everyone. The old Ford GT is, in my opinion, now the fastest car in the world.

Having been to the Texas Mile and other events the Ford GT seems to be the fastest way to standing mile glory. There’s the M2K...

Koenigsegg's Look Ma No Hands Feature Still Blows Our Mind

Koenigsegg's Look Ma No Hands Feature Still Blows Our Mind

Accelerating to 186 MPH and then coming to a halt in 17.95 seconds is one thing, but doing it without holding the steering wheel should not be possible. Like, at all.

Then again, Christian von Koenigsegg seems to live by the idea that impossible is nothing. His Triplex suspension is not only named after a 1928 speed recorder that was powered by a trio of 27-liter Liberty aero-engines for a...
