The Age of Media Corporation Mega-Mergers Is Robbing Us of Bolder, Fresher Storytelling

Disney isn’t just the first studio to have five pictures cross a billion dollars at the box office in a single year and it isn’t just the biggest film studio right now. It’s the biggest film studio in the history of Hollywood. While investors are likely very pleased with this fact, the company’s series of monster mergers has set off a chain effect with other studios doing their own monster...

We Just Have to Accept That The Handmaid's Tale Is a Fantasy Show Now

We Just Have to Accept That The Handmaid's Tale Is a Fantasy Show Now

The season three finale of The Handmaid’s Tale is powerful and tense, but not for the reasons the show used to be powerful and tense. It’s changed from a dystopian nightmare to a revenge fantasy. This is the moment viewers have to decide if they’re going to stay and enjoy the ride, as it’s already been renewed for a fourth season , or get off the plane. There’s no going back after “Mayday.”

We’re not even through with summer and Walt Disney Studios has already grossed a record-breaking $8 billion at the international box office. And yet, even with that, 2019 hasn’t been a total win for one of the largest media brands in the world.

The MCU's Runaways and Cloak & Dagger Will Team Up in a Season 3 Crossover Episode

The MCU's Runaways and Cloak & Dagger Will Team Up in a Season 3 Crossover Episode

Remember the good old days, when the disparate parts of the Marvel’s cinematic franchise featured nifty little crossovers between shows and movies that established the idea that they were all part of a shared universe, meaning that there was always potential for big, epic team-ups? Hulu’s Runaways remembers, and so does Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger.

This winter as part of Runaways’ third season ,...

The New Series From Rick and Morty's Justin Roiland Looks Like Something Fans Will Adore

The New Series From Rick and Morty's Justin Roiland Looks Like Something Fans Will Adore

It’s called Solar Opposites, it’s going to be on Hulu, and it doesn’t feature any characters who happen to be the smartest people in the universe. But the art style and the sly, snarky sense of humor definitely echo Rick and Morty , which means Solar Opposites should have zero trouble finding an audience when it debuts next year. We got our first glimpse at last Friday’s Comic-Con...

Hulu's Into the Dark Takes on the Border Crisis in Its Most Dystopian Episode Yet

Hulu's Into the Dark Takes on the Border Crisis in Its Most Dystopian Episode Yet

Into the Dark, Hulu’s collaboration with Blumhouse, seemed like a bit of a gimmick when it was first announced : a new horror film every month, themed to tie in with an upcoming holiday. But the series has been surprisingly diverse, particularly when it comes to tone—and “Culture Shock,” the Fourth of July entry, is maybe the bleakest Into the Dark yet.

This month’s holiday is, of course,...
