If someone asks whether you want fries with your burger, you know what they’re referring to: fried potatoes. Maybe at some establishments, those fries are waffle-shaped, or made from sweet potatoes. But still, in essence, they’re fried potatoes. Within the last year though, fast-food chains have stretched the ontological boundaries of fries to encompass everything from doughnuts to now,...

USDA: A serving of French fries is 12 fries

Today I LearnedToday I Learned is a feature where The Takeout writers share something they learned today.

Last week, The New York Times discovered that French fries are not exactly a health food. (I’ll pause as you let this shocking information sink in.) The article ticks off the usual unhealthy suspects: starches, fryer oil, a topping of nacho cheese and bacon bits. But buried in this...

Your journey to better sweet potato fries starts now

Writers love to wax poetic about how food and its aromas “take us back,” make us wistful for grandma baking cookies or mom rolling out pizza dough. But food can prompt emotional pain, too, especially when it triggers memories of an ex. For me, the food that reminds me of my ex is sweet potato fries. And they don’t just remind me of one ex-girlfriend, they remind me of all of them.

I have sat...

Have I yet bored you by retelling the story of how I was once a bingo parlor hostess in England? Oftentimes, when I trudged home from the bingo, I would stop at the local fish-and-chips shop and get a paper cone full of fried things doused in salt and vinegar for my all-beige dinner. Sometimes, I didn’t even bother with the protein-packed fish: Just the straight chips, please. And they were...

Mamma Mia! Wham! Go, Dog, Go! Soon, a new documentary, Fries!, will join the illustrious ranks of such exclamation-point art. Deadline reports Zero Point Zero, the production company best known for CNN’s Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, has begun filming a documentary about the entire world’s obsession with fried potatoes. The release date has yet to be scheduled.

The director behind the film...

Woman issues dire warning about needle in McDonald's fries, is coincidentally missing a needle

The Australian produce crisis, which began with some sick bastard (or bastards) hiding needles in strawberries, continues. Since we first reported on this story on September 17, needles have been found in mangoes, bananas, and apples. Produce has been disposed of by the ton. At least one person has eaten a contaminated berry. There have been more than 100 documented cases, and it’s spread to...

Happy National French Fry Day

Yes, these trumped-up hashtag holidays area dime a dozen, but this is one I can unequivocally get behind. And fortunately, my job agrees, as it turns out The Takeout has taken some deep dives into the world of deep fried potato strands. So in honor of this holiday, why not take another look at our favorite fried potato shapes? Or our favorite things to dip fries...

What's the ideal shape of French fries?

Turns out, opinions on French fries are a hornet’s nest. It started last week, when I said off-handedly that steak fries suck. This led to me being castigated by our commenters, which in turn inspired this point/counterpoint where colleague Gwen Ihnat and I stated our cases for and against steak fries. That story inspired some more back-and-forths from the commenteriat, a blind taste test of...

Point/Counterpoint: Are steak fries a lesser form of French fries?

Last week, The Takeout ran a story about Dunkin’ Donuts testing out a product called Donut Fries, wherein I spent a few hundred words spittin’ hot takes about the gratuitous use of “fries” to describe any food that’s stick-shaped (chicken fries, apple fries, pork fries, calamari fries etc.). Somewhere in the story, I made some off-hand remark about how steak fries suck—those letters flowed...

So, to recap the butterfly effect created from one off-handed French fry comment: Last week I wrote, without a second thought, that steak fries suck. Our lovely commenters told me I was wrong and I should burn in hell. That inspired a point/counterpoint about the merits of steak fries: My colleague Gwen Ihnat was for, I was not. That in turn led to a discussion in the comments section about...

Dunkin's new Donut Fries part of troubling trend of calling anything stick-shaped fries

<a href="https://thetakeout.com/dunkins-new-donut-fries-part-of-troubling-trend-of-call-1825051077" data-id="" onClick="window.ga('send', 'event', 'Permalink page click', 'Permalink page click - post header', 'standard');">Dunkin&#39;s new Donut Fries part of troubling trend of calling anything stick-shaped fries</a>

We’re unabashed fans of Dunkin’ Donuts here at The Takeout, especially its coffee, but we must take issue with its marketing team for perpetuating a disturbing trend we’ve noticed of late.

It has to do with Dunkin’ testing a new menu item at its Boston-area locations called Donut Fries. These appear to be cinnamon and sugar-dusted doughnut sticks (aren’t these just churros?) and reception has...
