Stupid show, such a demeaning stereo typing of the Chinese. My wife is Taiwanese born and educated, migrated to the US after college, she thinks the show is insulting. We go to Taiwan every few years, I'm "white" and speak Japanese and Mandarin… better than anyone on that show except the Grandma. The Husband is played by a KOREAN, Two of the three children ARE NOT EVEN Ethnic Chinese! The wife is "ABC" and doesn't even know how to REALLY act Chinese from Taiwan! The ONLY person on the show that IS actually Chinese is the grandma played by the famous actress Lucille Soong!! Have you noticed Randall Park NEVER says more than a couple words in Mandarin? Cause HE'S KOREAN!! In the recent trip to Taipei to see a cousin get married, he's played by ANOTHER KOREAN!! You mean that they couldn't find any Chinese actors??? This show is Pathetic and Insulting.

Is "I have sweet blood" something everyone says when they get savaged by mosquitoes? I skyped my dad in HK to see if it was a Chinese thing and he just told me that everyone says it.

This episode really bothers me. It's lazy writing plain and simple. On its own I actually really enjoyed the episode, but my problem is how it fits in with the canon of the show.

Louis was in Taiwan.

10 Years ago he comes to America.

Then after at least a little while he meets Jessica.

They date for at least a little while and get married.

Jessica gets pregnant with Eddie.

The problem with this is that the show has already established that Eddie is in 7th Grade and 12 years old. And honestly the actor who plays Eddie in no way looks younger than 10. So whoever wrote this just didn't pay attention at all or didn't care and somehow no one bothered to change it.

I realize it may seem like a simple issue in an otherwise good episode, and in some ways it is. But it just really bothers me when writers don't take the time to fit the episode story in with the rest of the show.

It's interesting that most of the adult Chinese men featured in Fresh off the Boat are played by Korean actors, including Louis' brother in law. Of course, you gotta have Ken Jeong play Gene!

The polite fights reminded me so much of my childhood, when relatives would constantly fight over the bill, handing each other money, taking the bags and so much. I haven't seen a polite fight for quite a long time, mostly because I don't visit my relatives anymore. It also makes me wonder if we as the next generation, growing up, possibly having children, will continue that tradition or are we too lazy to do that.

People who keep up with the show - can you say that it significantly improves in the second season? I liked the previous one well enough, but I don't really feel compelled to check out the new one. Although I'm generally interested in depictions of Asian American life.

Everyone being proclaimed "Valedictorian" works in 2016. I'm not sure that would have happened in 1996

As an Asian American, the struggle is real when it comes to people trying to pronounce my first and last name so this episode really resonated.

Just don't even bother trying to pronounce, there is no way in hell you are ever going to get it right.

Thankfully my parents had the foresight to give me an American middle name so I've been going by that for as long as I can remember.

I haven't a clue where they got the name from and I don't think my parents remember either, my siblings once joked that a nurse gave them the idea.

I wish they would find a way to write Eddie out of the show entirely. In a family full of interesting, dynamic characters, he is the weak link, a one-note wannabe gangster/cultural appropriator that brings nothing but C- intelligence and the same tired tropes week after week. His only saving grace is his group of friends, and even then he sticks out like a sore thumb of mediocrity.
