Fresh Off The Boat sailing into cancellation after its current season

Pop open a bottle of bubbly for Constance Wu, who, now that Fresh Off The Boat is coming to an end, will no longer be burdened by her role on one of the best sitcoms of the decade. Vulture reports (and Variety confirms) that ABC will not order any more episodes following its sixth season, which began airing in September. This season’s 14th and 15th episodes will serve as the show’s last when they air in 2020.

Though lagging in the ratings of late, the show was beloved for its perspective and performances, namely those of leads Wu and Randall Park, who starred as the nucleus of a Taiwanese-American family in Florida. As Vulture notes, Nahnatchka Khan’s series, having aired more than 100 episodes, is the longest-running sitcom about an Asian-American family in broadcast television history.

Not all is lost, however. As we reported back in August , ABC is currently working on a spin-off that will center on an entirely new family in its universe. Variety reports that these new characters, an Indian family with a daughter close to Hudson Yang’s Eddie Huang, will be introduced in an upcoming episode. Vir Das and Preity G. Zinta are slated to star in the spin-off, with Fresh Off The Boat writer Rachna Fruchbom crafting the story.

Hank Azaria will reportedly no longer voice Apu on The Simpsons Hank Azaria will reportedly no longer voice Apu on The Simpsons

Since comic Hari Kondabolu interrogated the stereotypical characterization of The Simpsons’ Apu Nahasapeemapetilon in a 2017 documentary , fans of the show have debated whether it’s worth it to keep the Kwik-E-Mart owner around. The show itself even made an episode that directly addressed the controversy , though it wasn’t received well by critics . While Hank Azaria, who...

Zoë Kravitz scours the wreckage of her love life in this trailer for Hulu's High Fidelity series Zoë Kravitz scours the wreckage of her love life in this trailer for Hulu's High Fidelity series

It’s okay to be skeptical of Hulu’s riff on High Fidelity , the 1995 Nick Hornby novel that became the beloved 2000 film starring John Cusack. The first full trailer for the series apes some of the original film’s best scenes, and reveals that Zoë Kravitz’s lead is still named Rob. But it’s also clear that the series has...

On Thursday, the Senate formally began its impeachment trial of our president, Donald J. Trump. Trump responded with a perfect tweet that declared he “JUST GOT IMPEACHED FOR MAKING A PERFECT PHONE CALL.” That call, of course, was the July 25 one between him and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which Trump urged Zelensky to investigate his political rivals,...

Disney kicks the Fox out of "20th Century Fox" Disney kicks the Fox out of "20th Century Fox"

In what might be the least gentle gesture of an acquisition process that has already been pretty damn un-gentle to date, Disney announced today that its recently purchased vassals at 20th Century Fox have now been stripped even of their long-familiar names. In an act of frank and obvious vulpine intolerance, Variety reports that the X-Men studio has now...

It's Rumor Time: Is National Treasure coming back to steal the ultimate treasure—our hearts? It's Rumor Time: Is National Treasure coming back to steal the ultimate treasure—our hearts?

Nicolas Cage and Jon Turteltaub’s National Treasure movies come about as close to the platonic ideal of good dopey cinema as it’s possible to get, existing as they do in a world in which a man—two-fisted antiquities expert Ben Franklin Gates!—can first declare his intentions to steal the Declaration Of Independence, and then go ahead and follow through on...

Oscar Isaac to produce, star in Brian K. Vaughan adaptation The Great Machine Oscar Isaac to produce, star in Brian K. Vaughan adaptation The Great Machine

It’s an enduring source of frustration for a particular class of comic fan that, despite both the consistency and popularity of his work, only a single one of Brian K. Vaughan’s comic projects has ever been successfully adapted for film or TV. (His youth-oriented Marvel series Runaways, which he co-created with Adrian Alphona, for those of you keeping track.)...

Oprah says Russell Simmons tried to "pressure" her to abandon doc about his accusers Oprah says Russell Simmons tried to "pressure" her to abandon doc about his accusers

[Note: This article contains language discussing sexual assault.]Last week, the fate of a documentary centered on sexual assault accusations against media mogul Russell Simmons was suddenly called into question, when the project’s most high-profile backer, Oprah Winfrey, not only removed herself from her role as an executive producer on the project, but also dislodged it from her ongoing content...

Hulu’s Hillary trailer teases a detailed look at the polarizing public figure Hulu’s Hillary trailer teases a detailed look at the polarizing public figure

Given the current political landscape, many of us long for an alternate reality that features President Hillary Clinton. Hulu’s upcoming four-part Hillary docuseries probably won’t help us feel any better, but it does take a deeper dive into what the production describes as the “most admired and most vilified women in American history.” To illustrate that point, the trailer...

This man will not verify you on Twitter, despite what Jack Dorsey says This man will not verify you on Twitter, despite what Jack Dorsey says

Being verified on Twitter is a big deal to some social media addicts. People take you slightly more seriously, your insults pop up first in people’s mentions, and everybody wants to know how you got that tiny blue checkmark. Twitter hasn’t unveiled any new process since halting verification in 2016. But now, thanks to a Wired interview with Twitter...

James Corden got Steve Buscemi and Tim Roth to do a Reservoir Dogs parody James Corden got Steve Buscemi and Tim Roth to do a Reservoir Dogs parody

Reservoir Dogs has gone 28 years without a sequel, which is good because it absolutely doesn’t need one. Even so, the temptation to revist such a career-defining film must be powerful for those involved. How else to explain the decision made by Steve Buscemi and Tim Roth to reprise their parts as Mr. Pink and Mr. Orange for the...

Not even Apple is immune to cringey training videos Not even Apple is immune to cringey training videos

Apple’s marketing machine has done its very best to create a brand whose name immediately conjures up images of high-tech refinement. Its stores are airy, minimally decorated, and its products are advertised with clean, simplistic iconography. All of this is meant to make us think that the company’s somehow different from all the others. A recently rediscovered, absolutely terrible...
