Dirtcast Talks the True Crime Boomlet with 'Night Call' Podcast Host Molly Lambert

Megan Reynolds Feb 07, 2019. 1 comments

In 2014, Sarah Koenig and This American Life brought the trial of Adnan Syed and “Serial” to the homes of listeners everywhere, kickstarting the true crime boom from which the culture has yet to extricate itself.

To help figure out what is so appealing about content about grisly murders and serial killers, we got writer and podcaster Molly Lambert on the phone to discuss the culture’s fascination with serial killers, true crime, dead women, and whether or not we are scared to walk down a street at night alone, for fear of being murdered by a stranger.

DirtCast can be found on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, Google Play, NPR One, and iHeart Media.

Mandana Mofidi is our Executive Director of Audio. Our theme music is by Stuart Wood. This episode was mixed by Corey Schreppel.

Now That Baskets Is Over... What Was Baskets? Now That Baskets Is Over... What Was Baskets?

Baskets, an FX show that ended Thursday night, is a program that, like many in the overcrowded prestige television space , I know only in passing. The ads for the most recent season—its final one—briefly plagued the subway station by my workplace: a melancholy Zach Galifianakis in clown makeup, gazing softly into the middle distance in a way that...

I Could Watch Bernie Sanders Play Competent Softball on a Loop Until I Die I Could Watch Bernie Sanders Play Competent Softball on a Loop Until I Die

Bernie Sanders put his Brooklyn stickball training to good use on Tuesday by playing a fairly competent game of softball at Iowa’s Field of Dreams. Generally, these kinds of events feel forced, but please tell me if you don’t see a soupçon of fun and whimsy in Uncle Bernard’s astonishingly capable softball skills.Swing for the fences, Bernard. That’s a...

Pig Beach Is Dead Pig Beach Is Dead

Near and around the site of Ja Rule’s ill-fated Fyre Fest lies Grand Exuma, an island in the Bahamas that is home to a clutch of feral pigs and their small, feral piglets. These pigs have lived in relative peace, eating food thrown to them by tourists and rooting around in the sand and whatnot, but I regret to...

I'm Obsessed With This Victorian Crime Anthem: 'Nix My Dolly, Pals, Fake Away' I'm Obsessed With This Victorian Crime Anthem: 'Nix My Dolly, Pals, Fake Away'

Apparently, one of the hottest songs of 1840 was a ballad, a jaunty little bop that waxes poetic about a life of crime and basically translates to: “Keep Robbing, Boys!” This fact comes courtesy of Murder by the Book , the latest by the knowledgeable Claire Harman, who has written biographies of Charlotte Brontë and Jane Austen. It’s short and...

That honor...

A Quick Reminder That Hae Min Lee's Family Didn't Ask For This A Quick Reminder That Hae Min Lee's Family Didn't Ask For This

Like millions of other people, I devoured Serial’s imperfect first season , listening until the end for a definitive answer as to whether Adnan Syed killed his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, the Baltimore high-school senior who was found murdered in 1999. Serial’s first season, in the end, was thrilling to listen to but deeply flawed journalism; there were huge...
