Choose Wisely: Will Smith Teases Role As Genie in Live-Action Aladdin Remake

Corey Townsend Oct 12, 2018. 7 comments

Now, this is a story all about how a genie’s lamp got flipped turned upside down and I’d like to take a minute just sit right there I’ll tell you how Will Smith became a star outside of Bel-Air.

Yes, admittedly I know that line was the epitome of corny, but that does not change the fact that the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is hopping on a magic carpet and taking his talents to Agrabah. That’s right! Your favorite Man in Black will be starring in a live-action remake of Aladdin.

Smith took a break from giving us chicken soup for our souls with his inspirational Instagram posts to show us a sneak peak of the movie’s poster. Aladdin is scheduled to hit theaters May 24, 2019.

The role was originally voiced and made famous by the late Robin Williams in Disney’s 1992 animated film and Smith has some large shoes to fill. Growing up, I always assumed every character who was “of color” in any animated film was actually black, so I’m sure Big Willy will meet my and your expectations in this live-action remake.

Will you get jiggy with it?

As an adult, I have struggled with words from my past. You see, I’m what you might call a little bit “extra,” and ever since I was a young tender I was told I was too much. Actually, the word “too” was always ever-present in my childhood. I was too extra, too feminine, too much and to this day...

I’ve been gay as hell for some time now. I didn’t always have the language to articulate this, but I’ve had this affinity for a month of Sundays. Growing up, representation was lacking, so black women were what I turned to.I knew good and well I wasn’t a black woman—I wasn’t that blessed—but they portrayed characteristics that I admired...

We love Halle Bailey’s quick clapbacks as “Sky Forster” on Grown-ish, trading clever quips with older sister Chloe, who play her track star twin, “Jazz.” But as the newest—and newly envisioned—Disney princess to enter the reboot game, we seriously admire Bailey’s restraint when dealing with the onslaught of racists armchair critics who took issue with her earning the role...

As the nation celebrated the national holiday that symbolizes all men being created equal, a small minority of mistreated Americans cranked up the Caucasian outrage machine to address an egregious injustice that threatened the happiness and well-being of people everywhere.
