I Don't Know How to Feel About This Sexy Handmaiden Costume

Prachi Gupta Sep 21, 2018. 22 comments

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I didn’t see this coming, but, well...I didn’t: Just in time for the annual surge of predictably sexist Halloween attire, a bright red, sexy handmaiden’s costume.

Inspired by Margaret Atwood’s dystopian and disturbingly prescient novel-turned-TV show , Yandy, the website that urges “Everybody. Own your sexy,” has turned an international symbol of protest for feminists into the Brave Red Maiden Costume.

The description reads:

An upsetting dystopian future has emerged where women no longer have a say. However, we say be bold and speak your mind in this exclusive Brave Red Maiden costume featuring a red mini dress, a matching cloak with an attached hood, and a white bonnet headpiece. (Pantyhose not included.)

Finally, a costume for the woman who wants to stand before Congress to demand abortion rights while satisfying their narrow expectations of female beauty! Honestly this is so bad, that...dare I say, it’s good? Cut the puritan robes about two inches below the crotch, throw in some fishnet stockings and some black platform pumps, and voila, you’ve gone from oppressed puritan to angry sexy feminist. Incredible.

The Handmaid’s Tale has never had a great track record when it comes to its handling of race.
