What's Coming and Going From Netflix the Week of August 20, 2018

Melissa Kirsch Aug 20, 2018. 12 comments

A moody teen love story with a supernatural twist featuring Guy Pearce uttering lines like, “You’re a young woman in a frightening new world. I think you just need somebody to walk through it with you”? Could it be this summer’s answer to Stranger Things? Let us hope that The Innocents (Friday, Aug. 24) is even half as entertaining— if it is, it’ll win the week.

Other promising debuts include World Star Hip Hop-produced The After Party, starring Kyle as an aspiring rapper who barfs on Wiz Khalifa after sampling his powerful weed; and Follow This, a documentary series following Buzzfeed’s editorial team, in which you will likely find out the secret algorithm behind which Disney princess most correlates to your taste in pizza.

What's Coming and Going From Netflix the Week of July 15, 2019 What's Coming and Going From Netflix the Week of July 15, 2019

Jerry Seinfeld is back behind the wheel of a lot of fancy cars (and it looks like one moped?) as the next installment of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee drops on Friday. Bridget Everett, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick, Jamie Foxx and Seth Rogen are all part of the innocuous, low-commitment froth this time around. If you prefer something with...

What's Coming and Going From Netflix the Week of December 31, 2018 What's Coming and Going From Netflix the Week of December 31, 2018

The end of year offerings from Netflix were grim, so it is with pleasure that I welcome the bumper crop of entertainment in this week’s harvest. We’ve got the full complement of Indiana Jones flicks arriving on Tuesday (I see we are now calling the first installment “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark,” which I guess...

Let’s cut the crap and stop pretending there’s anything you want to watch this week besides The Great British Baking Show: Collection 6 (better known as Series 9 in the UK). It’s the most soothing show that ever there was and we all know it.Too sticky sweet? Then perhaps you’ll enjoy Westside,  a new “unscripted Netflix series” (read: “reality...

You know how the exact moment Thanksgiving is over you find yourself wandering the aisles of CVS while “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” blasts over the PA and you’re filled with overwhelming dread, another year come and gone and what have you done with your life? Of course you do. Well, this year is different. This year, you are...

What Your Kid Can Learn From BBC’s 'Sarah & Duck' What Your Kid Can Learn From BBC’s 'Sarah & Duck'

In the British cartoon Sarah & Duck, Sarah is a girl who lives with her best friend, a mallard named Duck. Their home is devoid of adults except the omnipresent narrator/possible dad. Each short episode follows the pair through both mundane activities (like making a cake) and fantastical scenarios (like the cake batter coming to life to coach them...

Last summer Netflix launched a new “Smart Downloads” feature on Android and this week it brought the same feature to iOS.The feature, which can be toggled on and off, sets things up so that Netflix will automatically download new episodes for you and delete old ones. Learning a new language is hard. After eight years of French, I was an abysmal failure at the language until I spent a month in the country using it regularly. There’s something about seeing words and phrases used in context that makes them a lot easier to understand than just reading them in a textbook.Lingvo is an app that...

Unplug Your Electronics Before a Thunderstorm Unplug Your Electronics Before a Thunderstorm

Bad weather around the corner? You may have to endure a rainy day without electronic distractions—that is, if you still want your television to turn on the following day.Today, CNET brought up the one question many of us asked ourselves during a thunderstorm: Should I unplug my PS4, Xbox, and other electronics or risk frying them all to death...

This Auto-Pausing Netflix Extension is a Must-Have for Chrome Users This Auto-Pausing Netflix Extension is a Must-Have for Chrome Users

One of my favorite Netflix tricks is a simple one. When you’re watching your favorite TV show on the streaming service within your web browser, not a standalone Netflix app, odds are good you’ll encounter opening credits and have to drag your mouse over and click the handy “skip intro” button to get going. I think that’s too much...
