The Root Wins 2018 Excellence-in-Features Award, Deadspin Recognized with Honorable Mention

The Root was recognized this week when the Society for Features Journalism announced the winners of their 2018 Excellence-in-Features Awards.

The piece “How Trump Ruined My Relationship With My White Mother ” by Very Smart Brothas Senior Editor Panama Jackson was recognized in the Diversity in Digital Features category which honors coverage of any arts & entertainment, features or lifestyle topic that highlights the diversity within a publication’s audience.

Here is the judge’s statement:

Wow. Just wow. This narrative had us shaking our heads and dropping our jaws. We could picture the scenes the writer described. We could hear the conversations the writer had with his mom. We could empathize with his feelings, torn and frustrated – and slightly guilty. A powerful column with a headline that doesn’t sensationalize – rather, it accurately nails the story in a few words and invites readers to find out why.

Deadspin’s Dave McKenna received an honorable mention in the Sports Feature category for his piece “The Kid Who Didn’t Die at Riverfront Stadium .”
