With a comfortable lead in the closing seconds of tonight’s third quarter, though, he went for it...

...and missed, but, hey, that didn’t look nearly as bad as it could have, and anyway, it’s kind of hard to focus on that when the 76ers have won about a hundred games in a row (12) and are now tied with Cleveland for third in the East.

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner resigned two weeks ago , leaving behind an offense that was second-to-last overall and in the league’s bottom five for both passing and rushing despite a team record of 5-2. For the resignation to come without warning midseason was unexpected for just about everyone—including his son Scott, who is also his quarterbacks coach...

Yessssssssssssssssss, Dwight Howard Is Joining The Lakers Yessssssssssssssssss, Dwight Howard Is Joining The Lakers

Because it has been true for longer than I have been alive that the NBA is more fun when the Lakers are interesting, the news that Dwight Howard will be joining LeBron James and Anthony Davis on a Lakers team that is very serious about contending for championships is extremely welcome. This is not likely to make the Lakers...

Larry Bird Complains After Artist’s Mural Makes Him Seem Too Interesting Larry Bird Complains After Artist’s Mural Makes Him Seem Too Interesting

Artist Jules Muck recently painted a mural of Larry Bird in the Fountain Square section of Indianapolis, which features the image of Bird in his Indiana State jersey doing the “Shh!” gesture, similar to the Nov. 28, 1977 cover of Sports Illustrated. This time, though, Bird is doing the shushing instead of the Indiana State cheerleaders. Oh, and he’s...

The Lakers Already Have A Center The Lakers Already Have A Center

Hey, remember back in mid-July, when the Lakers traded the moon and stars for one of the most talented young players in the NBA? Remember that? Remember when the team and the player did their big introductory press conference? Remember during that press conference, when that player—who is listed by the NBA as standing 6-foot-10, and who has a...

Report: Oh God Yes, There Is "Mutual Interest" Between Dwight Howard And The Lakers Report: Oh God Yes, There Is "Mutual Interest" Between Dwight Howard And The Lakers

The Lakers are casting about for replacements for DeMarcus Cousins after the big man shredded his ACL in a pickup game in Las Vegas last week. The pickings are slim. Joakim Noah is available! Only slightly better than that experiment in re-animation is this: the Lakers have requested permission from the Memphis Grizzlies to speak with the one and...

That Is Not Markelle Fultz Or His Mom That Is Not Markelle Fultz Or His Mom

During the third quarter of Sunday’s Indiana Fever-Washington Mystics game, the broadcast thought it had spotted a celebrity in the front row: Orlando Magic guard Markelle Fultz, who was identified alongside his mom. Great! Only it wasn’t Markelle Fultz. The game also aired on NBA TV, which greatly expanded the audience for this goof. (It appears to have been first...

The Nihilist's Guide To DeMarcus Cousins's Injury The Nihilist's Guide To DeMarcus Cousins's Injury

If karma exists, DeMarcus Cousins did some ethereal being mighty wrong. If this is just bad luck, Cousins not only has his own but several other people’s as well.Either way, the news that Cousins is injured, again, while preparing for his next career-resuscitation is an aggressively cruel development—and that’s even if you don’t want to speculate what a third...

Magic Johnson Is Doing Lists [Updates] Magic Johnson Is Doing Lists [Updates]

It has long been known that Magic Johnson quit his job with the Lakers so he could be free to tweet the most inoffensive takes imaginable without running afoul of the NBA’s tampering rules. But since retiring from his semi-retirement, he’s reached a brand-new level of old-guy social media usage—naming old movies and bragging about vacations. Granted, reading this...

Russell Westbrook Restructured His Contract To Give Tilman Fertitta Some Money Russell Westbrook Restructured His Contract To Give Tilman Fertitta Some Money

This will be hailed as unselfishness and a team-friendly move, but it’s actually neither of those things: Russell Westbrook, in order to facilitate his trade to the Houston Rockets, agreed to restructure his supermax contract and shift the payment of some of his salary into the future. The first thing to know about this move is it very likely...
