Margot Robbie gets into producing, starting with that Harley Quinn spin-off

Katie Rife Sep 16, 2016. 24 comments

Say what you want about Suicide Squad—and trust us, we have—but it’s hard to deny the appeal of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. She steals every scene she’s in, and not just because of her psycho clown outfit. Executives at Warner Bros. apparently agree, and are betting that Robbie’s charisma is enough to carry a standalone Harley Quinn movie that was first proposed back in May. In fact, they’re betting that Robbie’s charisma will be enough to carry several movies, and have signed the actress to a presumably lucrative first-look deal with the studio.

But the deal goes beyond allowing Robbie—to quote Ghostbusters—to choose the form of her destructor by having her pick of scripts that will be turned into movies where she’ll be shamelessly objectified. She’ll also be producing those movies, giving her an opportunity to pursue roles that will maybe go a bit lighter on the whole shameless objectification thing. (At the very least, she’ll be making more money off of being objectified.) She’ll be executive producing as well as starring in that standalone Harley Quinn movie, for starters, and is set to star in a movie called Queen Of The Air, based on Dean N. Jensen’s book about the torrid love affair between trapeze artists Lillian Leitzel and Alfredo Codona in the early 20th century.

And those are just the Warner Bros. projects: Her production company, LuckyChap, has three more projects in the works—a neo-noir spy thriller called Terminal, the Tonya Harding biopic I,Tonya, and something called Bad Monkeys, which is still in very early stages but will probably star Robbie, as all the other movies she’s producing currently do. She’s about to become even more powerful in Hollywood, in other words.

It’s something I think about a lot, and it’s what Agent Tench does to Agent Ford when Ford presumes to lecture the older agent during their investigation of the Atlanta Child Murders. To be fair, Tench...

Pixar’s ongoing efforts to make pre-teen children think about the fact that, really, we’re all just decaying meat on the way to the grave, took another grand step forward today, when the studio announced at D23 that its next feature—after early 2020-Shrek-a-like Onward —will be Soul, all about what happens after you die. Among the various live-action Disney projects that have crawled out of the company’s insatiable maw in recent years, few have been weirder than the proposal for Emma Stone’s Cruella . Not just because of Stone playing the iconic 101 Dalmatians villainess—which is only around a “DJ Khaled rapped on the new Aladdin movie ” level of strangeness—but because of...

Black Panther II is coming in 2022 Black Panther II is coming in 2022

Marvel issued release dates for a whole hell of a lot of projects during Comic-Con this summer, but among all the Shang-Chis and Black Widows and Multiverse Of Madnesses were a handful of notable exceptions—including the long-anticipated follow-up to last year’s critically acclaimed blockbuster Black Panther . The superhero studio patched that gap at today’s D23 expo, though, revealing that...

Although its critical reception has, uh, drifted a bit over the last 20 years—exacerbated by, among other things, a series of sexual assault allegations against its Oscar-winning leading man—Sam Mendes’ American Beauty undeniably remains a film of strikingly affecting visuals. (And no, not just that easily-mocked plastic bag.) The 1999 Best Picture winner is full of visually dazzling flourishes,...

Fun fact: As of today, there have now been more directors who have dropped out of Sony’s “Fuck it, we have the rights, so why not” film adaptation of the bestselling Uncharted video game franchise than there have been actual Uncharted games. That’s because—per IGN—10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg just bailed on the Tom Holland-starring picture, following in...

It’s been a long and winding road for the Flash movie, which—for various reasons—has proven to be significantly harder to get off the ground than a freakin’ Aquaman movie.
