The New Power Rangers Game Isn't Good

Can we just get a Power Rangers Musou already and stop releasing nonsense like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Mega Battle?

My initial reaction to the October announcement of the 2D brawler from Bandai Namco and developer Bamtang was “This looks like garbage,” but not having played the game I gave it the benefit of the doubt . I should have stuck with my gut.

Released last week as a downloadable title for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Mega Battle is an old school scrolling 2D brawler for up to four local players. The game features the original set of Rangers as we known them in the States, along with villainous mainstays like Rita Repulsa and her constant string of lackeys that don’t unleash their full power until the end of the episode.

I could forgive the stiff animations, the often clumsy controls and the quicktime events that serve as Megazord battles if the game scratched the Power Ranger nostalgia itch, but with voice work limited to short clips and not a lot of non-Ranger interaction, it falls short of that as well. Fond memories only carried me just past the character selection screen.

Part of me wants to say, “But Mike, this is a game for kids.” But why go with the two decade old original Rangers then? Save this sort of thing for Ninja Steel or whatever’s coming next, and if you want to go back over Ranger history, go long and deep.

Check out the video atop the post for ten minutes of me wishing I were playing a better game.

Telling Lies, the latest work of interactive fiction from Her Story creator Sam Barlow, invites players to curl up in front of their computer and comb through hours of leaked fictional National Security Agency footage. The Original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Soundtrack Is Still A Blast The Original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Soundtrack Is Still A Blast

Gaming series known for their superior soundtracks often have one thing in common — a wide array of powerful or catchy music orchestrated to fit a specific environment. Though plenty of games (mostly annual sports series) have used popular prerecorded tunes as part of their soundtrack in the past, they rarely stand out from the crowd. But Tony Hawk’s...

It’s not often I replay games, but when my sister asked for something to play together, I suggested The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. More than two years had passed since I completed Link’s adventure on my own, and I wanted her to experience it ahead of the recently-announced sequel . Let me recount all the ways I...

Escaping the House of Hades is no easy task. The ever-changing pathways through the Underworld are filled with danger—vicious specters prowl, eager for a kill, and traps are scattered everywhere. The music is a steady, pulsating rhythm to amplify that struggle. It can feel daunting. That’s why, whenever Charon’s shop appears, it’s a welcome respite. I’ve played about eight...

Collecting Things (And Silly Animals) In Dragon Quest Builders 2 Is Stressful Fun Collecting Things (And Silly Animals) In Dragon Quest Builders 2 Is Stressful Fun

There has never been a video game checklist that I didn’t simultaneously love and hate. The Explorer’s Shores islands found in Dragon Quest Builders 2 are chock full of them, and I could not resist their siren songs. They led me to mini-adventures that were fun and mildly frustrating, as well as an absurd encounter with a foolish animal....

Let’s be honest: I’m probably just going to pause every half hour to play video games instead.Rad came out this week, and while I wasn’t super in love with it...
