Birdman Inspired Hugh Jackman to Play Wolverine "Until I Die"

If we see a dozen more movies with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, we'll have this year's best picture, Birdman, to thank. In an interview with Cigar Aficionado, Jackman spoke from the perspective of watching Birdman as an actual actor with an iconic superhero role. And the movie may have struck much closer to home for him than for others.

Jackman told the magazine:

I said to my wife, 'The moral is that I should never stop playing Wolverine. I've got to find a way to keep playing him until I die.' I know that someday they'll recast the role with another actor…I'd be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic.

While I guess that the message of Birdman could be that losing your superhero role leads to a descent into madness, culminating in an ambiguous end to your life and career, I don't think Michael Keaton would necessarily agree. Granted, he did agree to star in Birdman, so maybe he agrees a little.

Regardless, something about Birdman scared Hugh Jackman. Even if he might someday be okay with letting the role go to someone else. Someday. Someday far in the future.

It’s a day ending in ‘y,’ so Disney has another live-action, villain-focused adaptation of one of their classic animated films in the works. This one coming from the screenwriter Kelly Marcel, who wrote the 50 Shades of Grey script. Excuse me while I weep for a bit.All the way back in April of this year, I mentioned that a...

Our Ancestors Developed a Love For Alcohol Millions of Years Ago Our Ancestors Developed a Love For Alcohol Millions of Years Ago

Obviously, alcohol's been a part of human society for a very long time. We started making it at roughly the same time we figured out agriculture, 9,000 years ago. A new study on our now-extinct ancestors revealed that they developed the ability to metabolize alcohol when they started going down to forest floors, about 10 million years ago. Image:...

Allow us to introduce you to the latest inconsequential benefit of our megacorp dystopia. I have to admit it, as far as incredibly minor bright sides to the horrifying rise of media studio megamergers go, “At least CBS owns the Kelvin Timeline Star Trek movies” is not as immediately exciting as “At least the X-Men can appear in the...

A New Study Reminds Us How Ridiculous Spoiler Culture Has Become A New Study Reminds Us How Ridiculous Spoiler Culture Has Become

Not a day goes by without someone, somewhere on the internet, feeling the need to express how they’ve been personally harmed by a news site focused on genre entertainment that committed the unforgivable sin of running headlines that very vaguely allude to the interesting parts of films and shows. “I have been slain by spoilers,” these people cry. “Why...

If You Take Out Your Phone in a Movie Theater, I'm Going to Ask to Use It If You Take Out Your Phone in a Movie Theater, I'm Going to Ask to Use It

Almost every weekend this year, I’ve ended up at the movies. In a relentless news environment, it’s nice to head over to the local multiplex, plop down, and turn off the rest of the world for a couple of hours. Sadly, I’ve noticed a disturbing trend: Even there, before the greatest spectacle that Hollywood can provide, people can’t stay...

The Lion King offers a number of lessons around innocence, deception, and love. However, one of my favorite takeaways from the movie—both the original and the remake—is the so-called Circle of Life. We all know the term, made famous by the classic song by the same title. In the movie, Mufasa, the king of the savannah, teaches his young prince,...
